Just did a 8 day 387 mile trip from Red Wing Mn to Burlington Iowa on the mississippi:

We stayed in marinas in the following towns (I am including mile markers)

Red Wing - Ole Miss Marina mile 791.5 First night June 30
Lake City - Lake City Marina mile 772.8 July 1
Minona - Minona Yacht Club mile 725 July 2
La Crosse - Pettibone Boat Club mile 697.5 July 3
Prarie du Chein - Prarie du Chein Marina mile 635.8 July 4
Dubuque - Dubuque Yacht Basin mile 580.8 July 5
Clinton - Clinton Marina mile 518.7 July 6
East Moline - Marquis Yacht Club mile 488.1 July 7
Burlington - Bluff Harbor - home port mile 404.5 July 8

Cruising speed was about 28 mph at about 3100 rpm that or slow at 1000 rpm at 7 mph - most places current was 5-7 mph - so I am assuming we can add a few mph to overall speed. Sometimes we would just float with the current and swim along but had to keep an eye out....

Here is a compilation of Video and pictures documenting the trip onboard a 2005 regal 2665 - we got towed up from Fairfield to Red Wing on June 30 and set out from Red Wing on July 1 and arrived July8 2012 evening in Burlington during a record heat wave - 387 river miles and 16 lock and dams - some beautiful country - fun way to document the trip - also nice sound track by Ivan Rosenberg!

Hope you enjoy and hope it is of value for anyone else thinking about doing this kind of trip.

Thanks for posting the video good job I like the river music. I boat from Stillwater to Pepin I haven't been down that far south yet just around a 100 miles. I hope you stopped at the Harbor Bar across from Red Wing it can be pretty interesting there.

Thanks for the video and for taking us along on the trip. It's always nice to see where other people do their boating!

Thanks Jab and Gofirstclass!!! Glad you enjoyed it - I love seeing pics and videos of other's trips as well. We did not stop in Harbor bar - didn't even know about it - many people said that St Croix river was really beautiful and I wish had planned that in our trip - hope to do that next time.

Thanks for posting. Have been on the lower Miss, but, not up in your area.

Well i tabulated how much I spent on gasoline on this trip - more than I thought at $846 unfortunately I did not keep track of gallons purchased but if you estimate an average price for gas of $4.20 a gallon and assume 390 river miles - that's 201.4 gallons or 1.93 miles per gallon. I suppose that is about right for an 8.1 volvo penta.

Very well done
Do you pay for the use of each lock. If yes how much.
Noticed most locks empty. Is that normal or were you at off time.

What marina are you in? This up comming summer will be the first on the st croix for my wife and I.

I'm in Boomsite 5th year its the first Marina on the St Croix doesn't offer much but it is as protected as you can get and very private. I thought about switching to St Croix Marina I just like the privacy of Boomsite besides at a little over $3,000 the price is right. I grew up on Lake Minnetonka and couldn't be happier being on the Croix the river is great I couldn't go back to a lake.

Great job! Very well done and it looks like it was a lot of fun

Thanks for the nice ride down the river, and great video. I love long trips like that!!

Yes we did, we closed at the end of Sept and pulled her out of the water right away. Getting work done this winter.

Did you just pick up that 380 Zach? We are in Sunnyside but I checked out that 380 that was for sale at Bayport...wondering if you're the guy that picked her up.

Justin

Thanks for the video, Ed.
Nice to see our boat moored at Marquis at 14:11 of the video.
Not sure what time or day you passed the The Burger Boat before entering Auxiliary 14, but it looked really quiet. The Corps opening the auxiliary locks on holidays and weekends is fantastic for PC in our area

Nice video Ed. You brought back many fond memories of boating in this area as a child. I was a mere youngin' when I would go visit my grandparents in Red Wing. Every Summer we visited my aunt and uncle who had a cottage on the mighty Mississippi about 5 miles up river from Red Wing. When I was 12, I captained a 36' Gibson houseboat from Hudson, WI to Lake City and back! This was the day long before they had regulations about age of captains behind the wheel. What a fantastic trip you had! Thanks for sharing!
