78 sea ray 240 da Popping in and out of gear at wot

my sea ray has a 240 351 mated to a omc 800 outdrive. both are in good shape. when i get up to cruising speed to wot it will make a clunking noise like its poping out of gear or somthing. is it my clutch dog? lower end going bad?. i have some play in my shifter in the back of the boat should i try adjusting my linkage to pull shifter farther forward?. it doesnt do it unless i am cruising speed . also tends to do it more if i have my bow up high, if i use trim tabs to lower it doesnt do it but then plows alittle....

Make sure your outdrive is all the way down. Check the to see if your drive knuckles are worn.
