305 Mercruiser w/Alpha I Drive
Hey all I'm new to the forum and have a couple questions... I purchased my boat last July and it's been a little pain in the rear!
only spent 2k on it so wasnt too bad but should have known that you get what you pay for! anyways blew the top end of my alpha I almost instantly then fixed that and blew the 305 about a month later.

Took it out this year and the first outting blew the bottom unit of the outdrive... lol no luck but know that everything is fixed I've been good to go!!! :)

Destroyed my aluminum prop this weekend so in the market for a new one. Thinking about going stainless but need to figure if I'm running the right pitch..

WOT I'm running about 35MPH @ 3800 RPMs.. Should I drop to a 17pitch or stay at 19?

Thanks for any help will post pics soon!!

PantyDropper (say what?)

RPM's sound a bit low, you should check the tables on Sea Ray to see what standard was. Actually, the speed sounds low too. So it could be prop pitch, or it could be the engine not making sufficient power for some reason.

Careful with stainless. Rather than destroying the prop you will be more likely to also damage the outdrive. Good props - but not if you normally hit rocks with them.

haha thats the name of my boat! lol

but motor runs super strong and puts out 260hp... has always stayed at 3800 rpms even with the old motor...

no way haha she's not a very big fan lol but I had the boat before she came along!

so according to the table on sea ray I should be running a 17 pitch... I was always told never to take the rpms pat 4k but its saying WOT should be 4600! I'll try that out and see what happens

PantyDropper? Our 240WE came with "2nd Affair" and my wife never fully appreciated that either...

You boat on the Ohio? If so, bottoming out would most likey be mud right? So SS may be OK for you.

Boat looks really good. Any more pics? Is that blue a paint job?

yea haha I had to hear about the name yesterday again... yes The ohio is where we do most of our boating the mud isnt really a problem its all the drift from rain bringing the water levels up and down. I scored on a 17 pitch prop yesterday (aluminum) but only paid $15 for it so we'll see how she does.

Thanks... I will make a thread with all of my before and after pictures within a couple of days.!

My boat's a 76 SRV200 with a 5.0 in it. I'm running a 15X17 prop and turning 4800 - 5000 rpm. I oversped it to 5300 this weekend. Very flat water with low fuel cell and only 2 aboard. I may go to a 19 pitch to get down to 4600-4800 range. We'll see. A good ratio was posted on another thread, 1 degree of pitch for every 200 rpm.

I have a 77 srv197 with a 302. It runs very strong for an old all original boat. I have a 19p on and run about 3200-3400rpm max. Don't know if that's okay or not but the boat runs fine. It's a little slow out of the hole pulling a couple of people on tubes though. I'm thinking of putting a 17p on if I can get the extra funds this summer. When I do I'll report back.

Bulgarian ak, Maybe we could swap props. I'll check to see how much shipping is if you'er interested. Got it be cheaper than buying new/used and still paying freight.

Yea I put the 17 pitch on and it jumps right out of the hole now and turns about 4200-4300.. I need my carb rebuilt and then I think I'll be right were I should be! Its crazy how much of a difference that prop made!!

Glad to hear the prop worked out. Do you want to sell the 15X19 or keep it for a spare? I hate to tie a bunch of money up in a new prop if it doesn't work out.

haha I would sell it to you but it was mangled BAD... took it to the scrap yard for $20 :)
