Hello all.... I replaced my manifolds and risers on my fully closed loop system and while I was working, decided to check out another possible issue. The temp gauges always read cool, so I thought maybe there were no thermostats installed. Before I checked, I purchased 2 new thermostats and 2 new installation kits. Both had thermostats however they were installed in different positions. In the case of the port motor, the thermostat was on the block, with the spacer on top of it (with 2 sensors) and then the split cap to each manifold. On the Starboard motor, the spacer was on top of the block and the thermostat was on TOP of the spacer with the split cap to each manifold directly on top of the thermostat. Common sense would lead me to believe that the thermostat should be above the sensors so that the sensors will monitor temp even before the thermostat opens. Correct? I don't know why they were both installed differently. Thanks!!!! Notice in the drawings... one has tstat on top of spacer and sensors, while the the other has the tstat below the housing and sensors.

Strange...I don't recall this spacer when I did the t-stats on my 1997 7.4's. Regardless, I'm not sure it would matter which side the spacer/sensor is on? The function of the t-stat is not impacted by the location of that spacer. And if you're saying both gauges have always run cold, you've already confirmed the location doesn't matter :)

What temp t-stats are you installing? And what temps have they always run, you say cool, but what is cool? Mine run 160 all day long...with 160 t-stats.

Tstats are 160. Maybe I have the spacer because its closed loop cooling? The flow splits at the cap to go to each manifold.

Thank you. That is the way I re-installed. But, won't the closed thermostat affect the readings on the sensors though before the tstats opens?
