7.4 L Merc Loses prime on re-start after running fine for 1 1/2 hr.

Fuel filter loses 1/2" fuel and after filling, engine starts but stalls w/ hiss. Is it a relay, fuel pump, fuel line, etc ?? I'm at a loss !

I have had the starboard fuel pump fail 3 times on the boat. Last time I took off the fuel filter and it was down an inch.
The first one that failed was the valves in it (original 1500 hours). The other two the steel diaphram failed. New pump was 142 first time (they gave me my money back as they said it was a defect) the second one cost 199, it lasted 260 hours. The last one cost 189. I carry a spare (OEM 279) and am getting better at changing it. I also took the original one apart and put the bottom of the last failed one on. If it fails again I think I will put the original one on.
Lots of post one faied 454 fuel pump failures. You may have different fuel pumpsthan me.
