Ok this is going on my pontoon and not the sea ray but anyway...

I am putting a trolling motor on the bow of the pontoon and need a source for 6 gauge wire to run from the batteries in the stern. Online if possible as all the local wire I have found has been residential wiring.

I also need a 50amp breaker.

thanks
John

Go to a welding supply store and look for welding cable. I don't work on pontoon boats, but the bigger the wire you use the less line loss you will have, so small welding cable with solder on lugs should work well.

I found this source on ebay as the cheapest. About 2/3 of everything else I have found. Interesting about welder's cable. What gauge wire is welder's cable?

As far as I know the wiring on the pontoon is the same 12 volt system as on the sea ray and cobalt.

Motorguide the manufacturer of the motor recommends 6 gauge wire. I know it will handle 50amps over a distance of 25 feet. The motor does not pull that many even on start up.

Thanks for the info.

This is the best place I've found for wire and accessories (like heat-shrinkg conn's) on the web. It's quality tinned wire, no different than Ancor- their pricing is great and so is their service. They mistakenly shipped me a spool of the worng size wire once- I called them and the replacement was in my hands in two days along with a prepaid box to ship back the incorrect wire.

I bought some heavy marine cable from Pacer Marine.

Welding cable is 4 gauge. It is also multi strand with fine strands and is flexible. 4-6 gauge wire used in building applications is multi-strand with large strands and is at best bendable. If you get the good stuff, welding cable will also have a better cover than building wire as welding cable is part of a tool that gets dragged around

Welders put out well over 50 amps all the time - my little Miller TIG can do up to 140 and it's barely larger than a hobby size machine.

You can also get lugs, connectors, and plugs for this as well so you can make the installation as temporary, or permanent as you want.

You might also consider using shore power cord cable, I don't know what the gauge is, but some cables are service rated at 50 amps. If the gauge is acceptable, you would then get a water resistant cover, and only have to pull one wire.

recommend these guys also. Had to use paypal if I remember right.

I ended up getting the wire from the ebay link I posted earlier. He had the cheapest price $1/foot. He was easy to deal with and will sell you exactly the length you need. The wire I received is tinned, multistrand, and flexible.

I needed 30 feet and most places would sell me 25 ft or 50 ft only.

When I do work like this I go to local truck/diesel/ battery shop so that I can have them crimp all my ends. (crimping is the only way to go) The best way to find one is go to local truck stop or deiselr repair shop (CAT, freightline, etc.) and ask mechanic. In our small town we have at least 4 shops like that and NAPA normally will sell and build cables for you. I like to add sleeves to larger cable like that to prevent any kind of problems and that protects the cable from were as the sleeve absorbs the motion of the cable while on the water, don't be fooled, everything moves around no mater how many tie-downs you have:thumbsup:.
