I've been searching for a 240 Sundeck 2001 - 2008 vintage for a a few months. I've found a 2008 model in pristine condition that I've made an offer on, waiting to hear back from the broker tomorrow. She's equipped with a Mercruiser 6.2 L engine - I've spent hours on this forum (thank you all!) and its clear the 5.7 350 mag is a favorite. Seems the 6.2 would be an engine held in high regard also, though I've found very little chatter about this specific vintage of 6.2's. Any advice/thoughts/experience? Is this a reliable engine that inspires confidence in ownership, well matched to this boat?

I currently own a '97 175 bowrider with the legendary 3.0 - its my second boat with a 3.0 and these workhorses live up to their name, I've been spoiled by its reliability. I'm sold on listening to the experience of current owners, thanks for any advice and thoughts you can share! I love my 175, but am so looking forward to the entertainment space and kick of a new to me 240!

I have twin 6.2 engines although they are 2001 models and they are great engines....the 6.2 is the same engine as a 5.7 except it has a longer piston stroke in the cylinder...this is called a 'stroked' engine.....the extra length of stroke increases the volume of air/fuel mixture that can be brought into the combustion chamber which increases the power output when the mixture is ignited by the spark plug.....

so basically i think the 5.7 MAG and the 6.2 MPI are the same engine for all practical purposes.....

I am pretty sure the hp and torque numbers between the 5.7 MAG and 6.2 MPI are just about the same...

Thanks Cliff, good to hear. I had read this about the 6.2 and it was my understanding as well - I hadn't read much from owners so its helpful to hear your experience. One of the mercruiser forums had some 2007 postings regarding broken piston shafts, but I hadn't read that anywhere else. They implied it was a 'new' engine, though obviously its been around in some similar form for years before, and since. Thanks again!

I have a 2001 240DA with a 2009 6.2 (383 Mag Stroker) it goes well, although I have not been in a 240 with a 5 Litre to compare the two

No issues with 6.2, rock solid. As stated, just a stroked 5.7. The extra HP carries the boat nicely, especially out of the hole.

Good to hear, thanks ManacleII and SeaJay62!

just one minor point of correction:

a 6.2L is a 377 cubic inch stroker...a 383 stroker would be 6.3L......

The 6.2 is a drop in replacement for the 7.4. It is a higher revving engine. I have a pair in Saint Max. I have no problem with them in my boat. I'm not sure how the Raw Water pump is configured on an I/O with the 6.2 If it is as difficult to get to as an inboard, you may want to consider a complete new pump from e-Bay. It is easier to R&R the entire pump than change the impeller with the pump in the ER. You can do an impeller change on the out of the boat pump during the off season and replace the entire unit at spring clean up time.

The 6.2 is probably the right engine for a 240.
Surprisingly, the acceleration versus the 350 is hard to feel under about 30 mph, but the 6.2 is good for around 2 mph more on the top end.
I have heard that the 6.2 has some premium parts in it, like a forged steel crank, but I can't find that verified anywhere in Mercruiser's literature.
