55 Sundancer Fire

This did happen last summer, so it is kinda old news.

This guy has a slip just down from mine at Pier 121 on Lake Lewisville in Texas. The boat was named "Gabe's Toy". It wasnt uncommon to see him shooting fireworks off the boat, but last i heard insurance deemed it an electrical fire.

He had a brand new 55DA in his slip the very next weekend after the fire. I asked him about it one evening shortly after (specifically how he got a new boat so quickly), he said that he went into MM the next morning after the fire and they handed him the keys to the new boat and said we will figure something out with the insurance company.

What! did they just have an extra 55ft Sundancer lying around. This guy must have connections. I have bought three Sundancers from my Maxipad ,oh excuse me MM over the last 8 years and I can't even get them to return my calls half of the time. They excelled in customer service indifference so well they closed the location this fall. Maybe I should move to Lewisville, because I am on the pay-no-mind list here. It's a good thing I own my own service company because Lake Conroe has been forsaken.

According to their website, MM Lewisville has 8 new SeaRay boats over 40' sitting in the water right now for sale, including a 55DA. It wasnt really that unusal for them to have another one in their inventory.

Ill agree with you, my experience with MM has been less than spectacular though. It usually takes a few days to get a call back. Ive found going in and talking to them was the only way to get anything done.

You TX guys should move to Lake Travis..SR's dealer in AUS, Sail & Ski, is top notch & have handled everything from purchase, finance, maintaince, scheduling, even owner's "how to" questions pleasantly. They give you the good time you're looking for with minimal pain. Plus we have the clearest, cleanest water in the state.

I have used them for parts and they are indeed great in customer service. I think they are an independent dealer. They once got me a part the next day from stock. It seems they can handle the entire request from the initial call to shipping you the part all in less time then it took my previous dealer to return my call.I agree with in person service requests and I had to resort to it. It's unfortunate that after buying three boats from the same store one would be treated like that. Their collective purpose is or rather was, to get you into a new boat. Most of my major problems with my latest boat I handled directly through Searay . They were furious to hear of my bad experiences with MM and took very good care of me.My ultimate goal is to get back to Lake Michigan but Travis does sound nice! It's a beautiful lake.

I spent the 2007 summer at Lake Travis. I had a lift and slip at Lake Travis Marina. All I remember is the the thick film of chalk I had to wipe off every day after use. There was always big hunks of wood floating in the water to dodge. 3-4 foot swellls in the main channel from drunken boaters all over the place. Just madness all summer long. I would never go back without a 40' footer.

Kurt wrote I would never go back without a 40' footer. That can be arranged. The AUS boat show in only weeks away.

My guess the chalk Kurt speaks of is dried calcium from the hard water & yes, to keep our blue hull looking good we rinse it with soft water & dry with a soft towel. Chunks of wood....sometimes there's a bit of debris, especially after a flood but that's not very often & they sink within weeks. When the lake is low, as it is now, you have to be very careful of the shallows; rocks & stumps take their toll on the mindless & the mechanics love it. 3-4' swells....that's a bit tall...max 2' due to large boat wakes but no direct relationship to drunks, just rude untrained boat drivers. LT, due to the affluency of AUS has probably more rich young boaters, some with huge boats, than most lakes & nothings says they have to be well trained. Drunks...yea, we have more than our share. What we used to have more of were drunk go-fast boats running the lake at night. The cost of fuel, lower lake levels & aggressive lake cops have reduced their threat. The summer holidays are the worst, to the point we usually stayed tied up in our ship.

Rude and untrained drivers? oh come on that never happens. Good for you on the soft water. I use a Wet Spot softener myself do mitigate the damage of minerals in hard water. I have the hull polished with acrylic sealer every two years . I found in this part of the country it protects well. Drunks are everywhere I have ever been on a boat. Big boats ,little boats a drunk boater is a drunk boater! Prudent operation is your best defense. I used to take my cruiser out on itty bitty Lake Conroe for fireworks but don't anymore. The dangers out weigh the show. Nowhere will you find a more teeming hive of drunks and weirdos than you will on the fourth of July on Lake Conroe! I now enjoy the show from the marina. As for big waves, there is something quite satisfying about crushing through a large wake in a 310 Sundancer at 27kts. I had mine in Lake Michigan in 4 to 6 foot swells and had the time of my life. There is nothing scarier than an inebriated go faster at night;no lights fearless (mindless)60+kts! Happens regularly here and they do hit things.I have noticed a reduction of them since fuel has until recently been so high. I guess the 60 gph @ $4.00/gallon put most of them back on the trailer for the time being.

I thought Lake Lewisville had the market cornered on Texas drunken boaters.... I did see a reduction in the high performance boats on our lake this summer as well. Cant say I missed them.

BON DIA reply....I meant we keep the boat tied up in the slip For Xmas a couple of yrs ago she bought me a book on knots...in a rush I just throw a couple of half hitches & hope it holds.

I wonder if the Searay marketing team had a premonition about all the electrical fires on the 55DA model when they created this "electrifying" invitation? Kinda funny in hind sight.
