When I was in the market for a 56', everywhere I went on the Internet scarred me shi**less in regards to the MAN diesels.
The best decision I made was to choose a boat with the MANs. There is a lot to be said when your boat is overpowered (engines have to work less, absolute speed should you need it, many cases more efficiency, and usually greater reliability as you run the engine at lower load levels to maintain same speed).
MANs are built to run. I've meet people out in the water with 3,500-4,500hrs no oroblems. But, as with any engine, if you don't use them often (at least once a month) the cost is going to be great.
Either way, used and maintained, either engine choice is suitable to the 50/52 DB IMO.
