500/520 DB official thread

My shower sump has a large access door in the top plexi glass panel for a quick access.
Ohh, can you take a pic of this when you get a chance? I would like a watertight, smell-proof door.

Yes, I will be at the boat this evening to prep it for hurricane Lee going by us. I will grab a pic then and post it.

This is basically what I have there obviously size to fit.

Same exact hatch on mine also.
I also rerouted the galley sink to the starboard common drain line rather than the sump so all of that nasty galley stuff now doesn't go into the sump. It is so much cleaner and easier to take care of.

Ok, I investigated in the laundry room. Here are some images of the forward sump area on my boat.

As you can see, a hose coming from the shower/sink tank goes into this sump. So if underway and someone uses a lot of water, it could get into this hose.

Also, this “false sump” thing is interesting. Is this water due to condensation? There is no way for water to get into this covered area without fracturing the keel, right?

Update: I removed 5+ gallons from this false sump box thing. I am so thankful that I have this 2nd hatch. I highly recommend adding your own.

Ok, I found a small drain hole between the covered sump rectangle and the forward sump. This explains the constant alarms by the forward pump.

I am still confused, though. How is water getting into the covered sump box? Nothing drains into it. Condensation? I imagine this was a knowing issue by Sea Ray since I have the 2nd access near the shower/sink box.

One more update. I do not think my forward pump has worked for a while.

After flipping the switch on the bridge, there was no response by this pump. I think I may know why. Gotta love boats!

I did the same thing with my kitchen sink drain. It has helped keep the shower sump much cleaner.

That decked area is not a "sump" and should remain dry.
There is no switch on the helm for the forward sump.

At some point the forward bilge area must have filled with water from a leak and they had to cut access holes to get it dried out.

The bath sump box if the float or pump fails to come on will overflow and run aft along that decked area to the forward bilge pump. For all practical purposes that pump should never come on.

That is interesting what you found with the drain hole from that compartment I will have to check mine and see if I have a drain hole as well. I will probably put an inspection Port in mind this winter to see if I have any water in there. 5 gallons of water is a tremendous amount of water but that is consistent with what I have read on others with these false floors.

Exactly Tom. My shower/sink sump pump is too gummed up to work I think. Therefore, the overflow hose routed this water to the forward sump. And since this pump was not working (due to the cut 12v wire) the water backed up into the decked area. I think I finally figured this out with everyone’s help. Thanks!

Also, I am looking to route my sink drain the way that you guys did and preserve the sump for just bathroom sink/shower stuff.

It definitely explains how much water got in there.

Do either of you have pics of how you rerouted the kitchen sink drain? I would love to do this as well. Is the starboard drain accessible in the laundry room?

Ok, I figured out how water gets into the decked area. It’s due to this small hole. When your shower box overflows and that pump cannot keep up, the water is directed aft in the tube to the forward sump.

The forward pump’s float is set fairly high up, so it does not get rid of all of the water. And that tiny drain hole is below the water line when the pump is activated.

Do you think it may be worth it to plug up that little drain hole? It is counter-productive in getting water out of the boat. Also, can this float be adjusted down to clear more water?

I assume that this is the starboard drain.

What products did you use to join the sink with the starboard drain? Stuff I can get at Home Depot and/or West Marine? Also, what did you use to plug up the hole left in the shower/drain box?

To play devils advocate, above you said that the water that was in the compartment was fresh and clear with no smell. If it was overflow of the shower sump I can’t imagine it would be clear with no smell as that water is usually pretty nasty.

I think somewhere in this thread, it is documented by someone on how to move the sink drain over to the common drain. maybe Tom? I followed somebody’s lead on how to do it.

Looking at the picture, if that is your sink drain, it looks like it already goes overboard Through a thru hull. You will have to follow that line up to see where it originates. The sink drain runs behind the fridges in the galley.

Ohhh great point. Hmmm. My shower box pump definitely was locked up. The overflow how would have definitely been fairly nasty. I am currently looking at how I can set the float lower so the pump starts sooner.

Do you think it’d be ok to block up that small drain hole into the dry decked area? I appreciate all of your input.

That is the washer/dryer drain line. It loops up behind the refers then back down and out.

Ok gotcha. I will read the thread you linked as well. Thanks! What do you think about plugging up that drain? I think I may put sims silicone in there for a temporary plug. And keep the decked area dry for good.
