500/520 DB official thread

Giola can not make/order the Captains Navy version for you?

Unfortunately, Gioia Sails has not been super responsive. This is my first boat, so I am learning that communication can be quite difficult with marine companies. Something you guys probably already know. Haha!

I hope they can help me out, but I was curious if there was another material option I could send them or they could look for.

Also, here is an updated pic showing my current damaged sunscreen and new captains navy sunpad cover. You can see the old sunscreen is not a perfect match to captains navy, but it’s a lot closer than what Gioia Sails made me.

Battery Charger failed last night… What charger is everyone using?

Any feedback is appreciated…
Mine is a ProNautic 1250 C3 from 2011 and handles 2 8D AGM battery well. There is probably a newer version of this one now.

Thanks for the battery charger info.

I just wanted to give a shout-out to www.fpmarine.com

They have all of the push locks and Mobella lock engines that I needed to fix my old door handles. And they had instructions that made installation a breeze. If you guys have door locks that need replacing, they are super helpful.

Also, does anyone know the best way to fix a ding/gouge in the dark cherry laminate below the entertainment center. My captain said to get a stain and just recolor it to blend in. I’m curious if anyone else has fixed impact damage on these laminate surfaces. Thanks!!

Tom

Does anyone know where to get a new captains navy colored sunscreen for a 2005 DB? I just received one from Gioia Sails (they were the OEM sunscreen manufacturer in 2005), but it is the wrong shade of navy. I included a few pics below showing the difference.

Also, if someone is interested in this new double mesh sunscreen, please let me know. It has snaps included and is ready for install.

Tom
I have all navy blue canvas. But, my window screen is black.

Tim

Tim, could I see this? Gioia can do black, but I was unsure what this would look like. Thanks!!

Tom

I will be back to the boat for labor day weekend. Remind me to take a pic!

Tim
Sure thing. Thanks Tim!

Since I have a navy sunscreen currently, I am curious where the previous owner got it. It’s a mystery that I’m looking forward to figuring out.

Try Anthony or Frank at AMC canvas in Copiague. They will travel to your boat. They do amazing work!

Four common candidates for you by my ranking. Others may differ.
1 - Victron Phoenix 12/50 (https://www.victronenergy.com/upload/documents/Datasheet-Phoenix-Battery-Charger-EN.pdf)
2 - Mastervolt Chargmaster 12/50-3 (https://www.mastervolt.com/products/chargemaster-12v/chargemaster-12-50-3/)
3 - Victron Centaur 12/60 (https://www.victronenergy.com/upload/documents/Datasheet-Centaur-Charger-EN.pdf)
4 - ProNautic ProMariner 1260P (https://www.promariner.com/en/63160)

A note on Victron - like Garmin or Raymarine they do periodic software/firmware updates so adding the communication interface is recommended.

Tshannoz, here’s my boat on the left I think black goes with any color canvas and I agree it blends with the side salon windows. We also had the front windows ceramic tinted for more protection

but you can easily see through them even with the cover on. Any canvas shop can make a cover for you we’re not sure where you are though.

Havana, thanks so much. Who made your sunscreen? It looks to have a similar pattern to mine.

It’s so interesting that black goes with the captains navy. I was so concerned about everything matching, I never thought about keeping everything associated with the windows black. I’m in Saugatuck, Michigan, on Lake Michigan near Chicago. I’ll definitely look into this option.

Wow. Thanks Spike!

Black looks great with navy canvas. I never would have suspected that.

And it’s so much easier. Another $1k sunscreen should do the trick! Haha. Thanks everyone!

Take a look at Phifertex for the sunscreen fabric. That is what I used and really like it. It lets plenty of light in but cuts the heat dramatically.

Thanks TT! Very cool. I love the textured look as well. I’ll look into the color options. Who made your sunscreen? I am hopeful other companies have the 500/520DB pattern.

Also, who made your sunpad? That’s the updated design from 2012, right?

I made the sunscreen; couldn't find anyone around here within reasonable cost and schedule so I bought a sewing machine, fabric and all of the doodads and learned myself. Me and Sailrite.com have become close.... The lounge pads are as they came with the boat; I made replacement covers for them and a weather cover that snaps over the entire area.

I'm Captain Navy canvas with a black mesh front mask. Sometimes in FL, we will put an opaque white canvas mask on to block more heat...bothlook fine IMHO...

Thanks everyone. I’m surprised black mesh looks so good with captains navy. Go figure!

Also, it sounds like mesh hasn’t been the greatest for heat blocking. Is the Phifertex material a lot better?

Yes you will be happy with the Phifertex but like Carter I also have a white opaque cover that snaps over the Phifertex screen so when we are not using the boat it keeps things even cooler.

My big issue is the bridge and finding a means to block the sun.
