I have had a nagging alarm for the last year or so on the 496 Mag on my 270 SLX and wanted to report what the problem was, in case anyone else runs into this issue.
The alarm would come on and go off intermittently, and there was really no rhyme or reason to when it would come on. It was an alarm coming from the helm. BEEP ----- BEEP ----- BEEP, etc. It was extremely frustrating, and quite embarrassing when entertaining people on the boat.
It turns out I had a faulty float in my outdrive lube reservoir. The float was stuck in the down position, sending a signal to the computer that the fluid level was low.
A boat mechanic buddy diagnosed the issue OVER THE PHONE (the dude is sharp), and said it is a common problem with that setup. He said once or twice a year he goes out to diagnose an alarm only to find that a faulty float was the issue.
Stupid. Simple. But an easy fix, so I'm happy.
