480 DB Owners Club

FYI Boltman.... While I hope I don't get scolded by Gary for posting on the sacred and highly exclusive 480DB forum, I thought I'd let you know that I tried to reply to your PM but your box is full..... Sorry for trespassing over here, but I thought this was the best place to get that message to you.

The dinette floor was already in the boat when I purchased it. I thought it was a factory option? Glad the flooring was put in that orientation!

I have a few more pic's, but my upload limit is 48kb. Would love to share some more, but can't upload them. How do you get more space? I only have 3 pics in there and can't seem to delete them either?

Damn confuser!

One way to get more space is become a sponsor (paid membership). Highest sponsorship level gives you most space for pix and PMs. Otherwise, your only option is photobucket or similar, where you upload image and then use direct link to the pix to be posted in the thread.

Some more pic's of before and after

Very nice

Thanks for sharing.

I am a new 480 DB owner and I am extremely happy to join this great group. I really wanted the hydraulic swim on my new boat but came across a wonderful boat without one so I bought it. Now, I have to at either the hydraulic swim or a transom davit system. The davit is going to be cheaper. Does anyone know of any 480 threads on adding a transom davit? My questions are what model davit was used and how much fiberglass work was needed?

I know the platform is going to cost an arm and a leg but if you're going to keep this boat for awhile, I'd think pretty hard about it. It's just hard to beat for function, convenience, looks. Then there's resale to think about. Many will just skip right over it if it doesn't have a platform. If you got into the boat right, shouldn't hurt you too bad overall. I'm sure aqua can put one on for you. If not, the yard here at gtb can do it.

Congrats on the new boat. We love pickwick.

After a ton of research, I have found that it is the difference of about $15k for Davit and $30k for platform. I agree that the platform would be better and I do plan to keep the boat for a while...I just hate the idea of the first 30 times I lower the PWC into the water that there went $1000, but you are probably right that it is the best thing to do. I haven't been to gtb but I have heard good things about the trip. We are leaving August 28th heading down to Sandestin. About 5 boats from pickwick are heading down. We love this trip. I am looking for ideas on what to do with the boat to really make it awesome. What about the blue and red lights for the exterior lights? Does this really help with bugs at night vs normal lights? I loved what I saw on this blog with what somebody did with the flybridge table and cushions, that looked great! One other thing, has anyone replaced the refrigerator in the flybridge with an ice maker? I would prefer that. Thanks for any and all feedback, I just love talking about the boat. Oh, one last cool thing about Sea Ray, my father in law, brother in law and myself are all on the same dock at pickwick and we all have Sea Ray Flybridges...400,480 and 560.

Has anyone had their side windows tinted? Two companies have turned the job down after seeing pictures due to the galley cabinet and the one that houses the TV being so close to the glass. I've seen 480's tinted before so someone has figured it out and I'm not removing the cabinets per their suggestion... I've had many vehicles tinted so I know they need access but you would think "marine" tinters would run into this all the time.

If you can't find anyone, do it yourself. Make sure you buy quality tint. It's not that difficult.

I had a surveyor tell me that all the "green line" hoses, which are all the sanitation and through hull hoses are dry rotted and need to be replaced. About a $4k job. He said the manufacturer recommends that they be changed every 7 years. A local mechanic says that the insides are probably fine and that I don't need to replace them yet he can't guarantee they won't leak soon (which I understand). Anyone ever run across this?

I had mine tinted about 4 years ago. Its in the sun all the time and it does help. As far as behind the TV-I did not remove the cabinet so it wasn't tinted there.. You can't tell from the outside that it wasn't done as that area is already dark. Yea maybe its ideal to remove it but that's quite a job.

I actually had to have my hoses done also. They dry rot where they come thru the bulkhead in front of the engines. Not sure of the cost, I had it done as part of my deal.

Before I purchased Diamond Girl, I was considering another boat which didnt currently have the platform. I had costs to add it from approx 16k to 30k. Definitely shop around and get quotes.

Thanks for the info, so I guess this is common. I will go ahead and have them redone. As for the platform, I will probably bite the bullet and add it over a transom davit system but that is a big price tag. Thanks for the feedback. Now, I need to go find some projects that don't cost so much money!

The one advantage I see with the crane type davit is that it may be easier to load the dinghy in rough water.
I know if it's rough, I have a hard time because my dinghy has to be just right in the chocks.

Greg, I don't think that crane would be easier than a platform setup. The dink is heavy and will swing like crazy. It's not fun trying to catch an object that weights close to 1000lbs.

From the setup I've seen with crane, the dinghy sits way too close to the stern locker, which would be a big concern in the rough conditions since the swinging dinghy can damage the big boat as well.

Since my setup is somewhat similar to yours I'd say that platform with a lift is more manageable in rough conditions. I've had to do this few times and my approach is just to lift the boat safely on the lift. It doesn't need to be perfectly aligned. Once I get the safety straps at the stern I then able to push/slide the dinghy toward its stern and hook up the bow straps. So it's actually not too bad. Thinking about the crane, one would need to have assisting lines attached. The problem is that you can't secure the lines b/c the crane needs to swing from one side to load the dink on the platform.
