480 DB Owners Club

Hi folks. Just wandering how you adjust the dinghy chocks on your platform. I need a little more angle. Thoughts?
 
Well, I've joined the 480 DB club. We recently purchased a nice 2003 with QSM 11's in Ft. Myers, FL and brought it back to Miami across Lake Okeechobee and down the (slooow) ICW from Stuart - a great intro cruise to the 480 that has us very eager for many more locally, to the keys and Bahamas. And, I have a contract on the 370 DA so things in my boating world are great! :) It's been lots of fun to start learning the new systems, and enjoying things new to me: auto-pilot, a bow thruster and the flying bridge. Loving it!

Of course I have a long list of projects queued up - the first being upgrading the electronics to current Garmins. And, getting a dinghy. I had a 10' West Marine RIB on the 370 but that's included in the pending sale. My question today is about the capacity of the hydraulic swim platform on the 480. I think I read or heard that it's 600 pounds but want to know the spec so we can choose a dinghy of appropriate weight. Comments on dinghies (make/model/engine + total weight) stored on 480 swim platforms and any operational tips would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely a GHS lift. Their website has manuals and specs and a document to help you identify what you have. Rick Passerati is owner of the company and is helpful. Nothing is Inexpensive on that lift. On an 04 I think it’s a 700lb capacity but it’s in the specs.

What is the maximum people allowed on the 48 sedan bridge. I do not have a placard?
There is no limit to persons on the boat, however there is a warning about people on the flybridge. I believe it is 7 or eight people and there is a weight limit of 1600lbs if I recall. My numbers might not be exact but it is close.

My GHS lift has an 800lb capacity. I use a 10' RIB with 9.9 Merc on it but considering going up to 15hp Merc.

Right. Mine is 800lb and I have 10' RIB now and 15hp.

So where can I get an extra set of carriage bolts/nylon spacers and the nut?

Also, how do I adjust the chocks to have more angle?

Blown284, not sure where to get extra set of carriage bolts, nylon spacers and the nut. As for adjusting the chocks, I just did mine this off season. It just took the removal of a nut and bolt and then made the angle adjustment to the chocks. In my case, I wanted to have the dinghy bow at the port side, where my transom door is. It was the other way around.

Thank you..... I’m guessing you remove those one or two bolts and move it to another hole to get more angle?

Blown284, yes, just remove the nut and bolt and move them to another hole location in the chocks. I wanted to do my adjustments while the boat was in storage and out of the water. I have a tendency to drop the hardware into the water when doing items like this.

Robert, at the top of the steps to the on my 480, there is a weight limit "sticker" (not a formal placard) for the flybridge stating about 1,100 pounds (I'm going from recall here...). I can check the exact figure the next time I'm aboard but I was surprised by the figure and consider it lower than I'd expect. But, it's there for a reason so I intend to respect it especially underway in less than ideal conditions.

Yeah, just checked, looks like they took all the docs down. You still get the Google hits when you search ghslift manual, but 404 not found when you click on it. Manual libs is showing one but I don’t know what. I expect GHS will help you, they were very helpful a few years ago.

After re-looking at the hardware today, i see exactly what you're referring to. I will remove the nut and it appears I need to move them inward 2 bolt holes which will give me quite a bit more angle that i"m seeking. Thank you very much. I plan to re-adjust this Saturday when it's warm out (fingers crossed). Thank you!
 
MXXS - Great to see another blue hull ‘04 with MAN’s like ours. We have D2876LE405’s which are rated at 700 Hp. Do you have the same model? Currently in the middle of our big service. Where are you berthed?
We are in Newport Beach CA - D2876 LE401 rated at 690 horsepower (515 kW) at 2,200 rpm. not quite 700 but close. the paint job is brand new and custom, you need to see it to really appreciate it, Green metallic flakes.. Have a great day and stay safe!!

I just picked up an new Generations LTE 12, these are new bread of extremely light weight Tenders, a little pricy but seats up to 6 very comfortably ad with a Honda 40HP, comes in at just about 700lbs. hope it helps!!

My 480's swim platform is 11' 8" at it's widest point and I'm a little hesitant to put a 12' dinghy on it considering that with a tilted up outboard the overall length when aboard close to 13' - lots of overhang. Hence, I'm now strongly considering an 11' Achilles dinghy. I read that several 480 owners have 10' dinks - I have one of those on my 370 now and want something a little bigger that can seat 4 adults comfortably and 5-6 when packed.

My concerns about weight are about total weight that the platform will need to support in operation. I've stayed away from tenders since with motors most of them weigh in at 5-600 pounds and, with 225 pound me on the platform too, that either exceeds or is very close to max capacity. I prefer a good margin of safety - in all things!

Any feedback on these topics will be appreciated!

Generations LTE has a 10ft, 11ft, and a 12ft. yes the motor is heavy, but I'd prefer to be on a more stable tender as we have our vessel on the pacific coast and will not be doing any intercoastal traveling, so I wanted something heavier duty. My swim platform is approximately 14'.5" so my 12ft fits just right, very slight over hang. My biggest concern was weight though, and of course safety and comfort.

Congratulations on your ownership of the 2003 SR-480. Same boat we own and we love it. Lots to learn because it's a very different boat than your SR-370. We've had ours for 18 months and are still learning. Hope you love it.
 
The water line stripe decals on my 480DB are looking shabby and I'm deliberating whether to have the new stripes painted on versus installing new decals. The painted stripes will cost almost 50% more (about $3k vs $2k). I'm also planning on raising the bottom paint to the top of the engine exhausts at the same time. I know other folks have raised their bottom paint. Did you paint your new stripes or install new decals? If painted stripes were they worth the extra money? If decals are you happy with them? Thanks!
