480 DB Owners Club

Hi Everyone,
I just joined a couple of weeks ago, as I closed on a 2002 480 DB a couple of weeks ago and can't wait for launch. In the meantime, I have been reading through a lot of the posts, trying to get up to speed. I am really looking forward to the 480, it has been on my radar for a few years now and anticipate fitting my needs perfectly.

Welcome to the group. 480 is a battlewagon. You will love it.

I heard if there wasn't a pic, then it didn't happen. rsz_1rsz_irie.jpg

Cherman, that is what I concluded was the problem. I will be ordering a new set once I can see the numbers on the cable for the length.

Excuse me for barging in to the 480DB group, but before you order new ones, check your shift cables and look for any tight radius bends before you order replacements. Sea Ray only deals with new boats and new cabling so they never see the effects of tight radius bends in throttle and shift cables. If you have a tight bend, that very likely is where the inner jacket has worn thru. If you need to add foot or so to the length to reduce a tight radius cable bend, it is cheap and easy to do when you order new cables and may make the new cables even smoother.

Frank, you are more than welcome to barge in... That is a great thought. My cable is smooth when disconnected from tranny but not moved other than C-clip removal. I would think that binding from tight bends would affect it when not connected. What are your thoughts? Thanks-Matt

Brent, Welcome to the site. Lots of good info here.

Frank, Thanks for the info. When the time comes I will try to make the radius as wide as possible. The trolling valve cables are going to be wide sweeps where I am running them.

Welcome Brent, there is a ton of information on this site and then you have us too... Most of us have had ours for a few years... These are great boats.. I splashed 3 days ago.. Let the season begin.

DC, congrats on the splash. It is a great day when the boat goes back in the water.

Matt,

When the cable end is free, the cable inside the jacket probably centers itself, whereas, when a load is put on the cable, the cable inside the jacket looks for the straightest path between the 2 ends and that makes it press against the inside of the jacket which increases friction and, therefore, control effort. Those contact points are also very likely the places where the jacket lining is worn thru and the cable is contacting the windings of the jacket.

Khaos, The replacement cable that is to my PORT Trans/shift is teleflex# CC63332 Which puts it at 32 FT. After looking at the path they ran the cable and what Frank mentioned above, I would go up 2ft. on the length. (CC63334) I don't like how they ran it under the Reverso oil change system and then made a heard turn up to the shift bracket.

As for the Starboard, I cant find any numbers on either end of the cable. But it will be shorter than the port. How much, I don't know yet.
If I come across any more info I will post it.

Anyone ever have to replace the start stop toggle switches for engines up at the helm? Went down to bump my engines during layup. Port toggled over once and dash lighted up QSM display powered up, then hit second position and crancked. Startboard did nothing. Toggled over once and no dash QSM display or lights and no crank on second position. If I put Port in first position and hold emergency crossover, then Starboard dash QSM and lights will come on and if I toggle to second position the starboard will crank. Anyone seen this before? Seems like the first position in the toggle switch is not working.

I had to change mine a few years ago. In my case it was the start position that was unreliable. I would have to keep tapping it for it to crank. Got new switches at flounder pounder, easy swap.

So I talked with Cherman today and he said he had shaft zincs. I only have trim tab and transom zinc. Question what does everyone have as I thought Searay never did shaft zincs as it might cause there to be too much zinc. Thanks.

Greg- Thanks. I ordered them from Flounder Pounder, as well. I hope that is the solution.

Mquiet- I have shaft, trim tabs, transom and four strainer intake zincs.

I have transom, tab and GHS lift zincs. I added shaft brushes. Those shaft zincs are huge and can cause damage if/when they come off.

BTW - I have a brand new pair of Martyr shaft zincs if someone wants them for $50 shipped.

I have Shaft, Tab, Transom, GHS Lift, and Bow Thruster zincs.

As for the shaft zincs falling off / sliding down, I've never had that problem. I bang them tight to the shaft with a hammer as I tighten them.

I saw this trick too. It keeps the zinc from wearing away near the bolts. I linked it to the article.
