480 DB Owners Club

Does anyone know the size of the packing for the rudders? I am spun all the way down and most likely need to add until haul out next year.

The manual for my 400DB is a generic manual that covers all motor yachts back to 1997. In it it says to replace with 1/4" cord.

MANS man was at my boat today , I bent a push rod on cylinder 3 , Saturday I'll be removing couch and lifting carpet . Talk to me guys how do I get the couch up and out ??

It can sometimes happen during over wintering moisture can cause a valve to rust a little bit , make oil stick cause the push rod to get bent , I'm just glad it happened on the crank up , WOT could have been a disaster .

Robert,

Sorry to hear about the trouble. That's some strange eplanation you were given, which leads to the obvious question. How do you prevent this from happening on any other cylinder?

Boltman, from what I can remember about the couch. Open the couch to the sleeping position. Look under the front and remove the screws that hold the lower cushion (if in the upright /sitting position). Then reach in and remove the screws that hold the back cushion. Disconnect power and if your have the rope cord around the bottom of lounge, make sure it isn't interfering. Mark the location of where you remove the screws that hold the frame down to the floor. Mine had 2 sets of holes, not sure why. wanted to make sure I aligned back in proper location.
That's as far as I went for my repair that I was doing IE: one of the couch actuators and cleaning from previous owner. The hatch removal is comprised of removing the caulk, the bolts that hold both hatches together. The screws that hold it down and the support pole or poles on that side in the ER. hope this helps, Chris

Oh yeah, that little drawer in the front of the couch, I removed that also

We finally took our first extended cruise with our 2002 480DB. We ran from Aventura, FL (Baker Haulover Inlet) to St. John Yacht Harbor (Stono Inlet) near Charleston, SC. A harrowing experience to say the least. While waiting to get into the St. Sebastian Inlet, we got hit on the stern by a big wave that popped out our Sea Ray insert from the hydraulic swim platform. Now we have a dangerous hole dead center of the platform.

Before I get the router out and attempt to create a replacement, does anyone know of a good source for these?

Deuce, why do you have to wait to get in the St. Sebastian inlet? Just curious? Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions...

It was the first time we ever attempted to go in through that inlet and the marina actually sent out a captain to guide us in. Once we got close to the inlet we realized why they sent someone with "local knowledge;" that inlet was like a washing machine. We hovered about a half mile off shore when the waves kicked up and slammed the swim platform from underneath, dislodging the large center insert and loosening one of the smaller ones.

I don't foresee going in through that inlet again any time soon, there's a much nicer inlet south of there called Fort Pierce that we should've taken.

Cherman, I checked out their site and they do have the small vent inserts and also a stainless one, but the stainless is for teak platforms. No luck finding a match for ours. :smt089

The Sea Ray Part# is: 1096080

Ok engine will be fixed tomorrow, anybody know how to get caulking off so I can re-caulk the floors and seal them off .

I just did this. I used a standard gasket scraper, the type with a razor blade on it. I found if I push the scraper with one hand and pull the caul off wit the other it went VERY QUICKLY. That was a relief as the factory had used a ridiculous ammount of caulk. Removing the panels took me forever.. from your picture and others I have seen on the forum, it looks like they went easier on the caulk in the later production years....

Boltman - seems like it was a quick fix? What did you have to have done?

I had an exhaust push rod get bent on the start up , so no nasty damage at all just push rod replacement 1500.00 or less , I'm so cool with that . Now MANS man will get her up and running tomorrow , Saturday I'll put her all back together After I've re caulked it all

Does anyone have any tips for commssioning the fresh water system? It's our first spring with the boat and I'm having what I'm guessing is a priming problem with the freshwater pumps. They will run continuosly but no water flow. watertank is 3/4 full (I'm thinking filling it the rest of the way may help?). Checked the pump filters, they are clear.

Crack open the output fitting on each pump with it running to bleed the air. Just be ready to tighten it back up cause it'll make a mess when they finally pick up.
