480 DB Owners Club

Hello everyone. New to the forum. I have a 2003 480 DB and have owned it since 2004. We are in New Orleans and boat mostly along the Gulf Coast. Having read through this forum, I feel like I've relived virtually every issue I've ever had. Wish I had found it sooner.

I have a couple of issues:
- I have the leak on the front windshield that has damaged the support where it meets the dash. Is it a bad seal or some other issue? Same problem at the port stern area of the salon windshield. Fixes?
- Looking for replacement sheets that actually fit the mattresses. Do you get those from HMC or some other supplier?
- Just an FYI, I had the black pieces of insulation issue where it blew out of the registers. Fixed it by replacing the ductwork. Pretty easy fix.

Thanks.

Also looking to replace the blinds in the salon.

I haven't done it, but HMC told me they can supply fitted sheets if you give them the mattress model number (from a tag on the underside).

A couple of thoughts on the windshield leaks - Have an authorized SR dealer/service center (probably MarineMax) work on it. It probably needs to be pulled out and rebedded. If they should break it then they will replace it - the windows are incredibly expensive and literally months in lead time. Not worth the risk from my perspective having a small repair company attempt this work and if they break the window you are stuck with the problem.

Those dang windows always leak when you run the boat in a real seas, as it is a point where the hull most likely flexes. Hence why Sport Fishing boats are fiberglass with black paint over to look like windows. Anyway, I have taken the black gasket out, then you should see where it is most likely dried and gotten caulking. Dig it out, but do not break the black tabs that the window sits on. Then replace with black caulk. Some people use 3m window weld, but it is super messy and it has failed on me before. I now use Quad(from Home Depot). Fill in the repair area and then put black gasket back over the area.

Has anyone mounted an air horn with compressor on the hardtop? Curious where to place the compressor, what products you have used and you overall satisfaction. I boat near Clearwater FL and maybe it was just spring break, but I had boats, jet ski's, kayaks, any type of watercraft you can come up with cross my path too close for my comfort. Doesn't matter if I am off-shore or in the ICW. I am thinking of getting a loud multi-trumpet horn to get people's attention as more than half the time they don't even see all 48 feet of the nice boat.

Thanks for any help that can be offered.

Have Beull triple Stainless Horns mounted on my hardtop. Very easy to install. I have compressor mounted in the lazarette. You only need a 2.5gallon compressor. The important part is to try and mount the valve close to the horns as you don't want a long run there and lose to much pressure. This was the best decision I have ever made. Safety has gone up as a lot of boaters don't und stand the rules of the road and our energy we carry. You can here my horns a mile away. Also because they are on the hardtop, I do not damage anyone's ears as the sound is directional.

@mquiet FWIW, when you quote somebody's post in your response, it works better if you type your note OUTSIDE the quote box that appears in your reply. That saves subsequent readers from having to "Click to expand..."

I installed Marinco 10122 air horns on my hardtop. The compressor is about the size of a soda can and I was able to mount it in my overhead electronics box. The horns are mounted directly above that. They put out around 120db and are plenty loud.

A buddy of mine had that on his 48DB at Kent Narrows. 5 horns on the hardtop, but I'm not sure where the compressor was located. Sounded and looked great though.

Thanks, not sure why it was all of a sudden doing that. Good feedback.

So who is the new owner of Chris Herman's 480? I was chatting with him the other week and he said it sold again. Congrats to the new owner. We also have a 480 Facebook page that was started by Russ that is fantastic as well.
Cheers!

Thanks for all the replies on the air horn. Lots of good information shared, thank you. Sorry I was slow to reply as I spent a couple days in the hospital last week.

Looks like the important thing to take away from this is to keep the distance from the trumpets to the compressor as short as possible if I read that correctly. Kind of makes sense to me. There's a couple different vendors I'm looking at but I'm pretty sure I'm going to move forward with one of them I just didn't expect to pay that kind of money for a horn. However, I wanted to reach my goal, which is to get people's attention and hold it while we are in a crossing situation (or similar) and I don't have to hold the horn the entire time, the loudness and uniqueness should resonate through their mind for a moment or two and we will hopefully maintain a safe piercing separation distance.

I don't want to come off like a jackass like Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack where he drives the 60 ft Striker flybridge up to the dock and hits the loud air horn and drops the anchor. I just want to seize the moment and get someone's attention.

The compressor and horn can be far apart, but the clave and horn should be within 5ft of each other. Give or take.

Another question.... There is an outlet on the starboard side of the cockpit in the tall skinny door. I am not getting any power from it when I have the breaker on. I check the breakers under the steps to the bridge and they all seem fine. Is there another breaker that controls this outlet or is it some sort of GFI that I need to reset somewhere? Maybe in one of the heads?

Thanks for any assistance and thanks again for the air horn help!

There is a GFI located in a cabinet under the TV set in the salon. That might be tripped. I found that out the hard way after searching for the cause of the electrical outlet located to the left of the TV cabinet not working. I figured it was a GFI tripped but it took me an hour to find it.

Thank you kindly for the tip. It really is in an out-of-the-way location for sure. Took care of the problem and we were able to light up the boat with our party lights(LED's and bow rail etc.). We were celebrating a friend's 65'th birthday and had 3 couples aboard. 1st. time we had more the me and the Co- Captain sleeping on board. Nice to know we had plenty of room with room to spare. I fell in love with this boat a long time ago but never thought we could do it, but our investments are working great and we got a freshwater gem with 500 hours.

Love this thread as there is always someone who has been there done that and has the greasy tee-shirt to explain it to me. I think I have to pony up and become a paying member as the info I get here is worth so much.

Thank you,
