I need to replace all of my engine room lighting and want to use LED's to replace the fluorescent lights. I would like them to be about the same size as the original lights. Any recommendations?

Easy project and will give much better light in the ER. I just took the original bulb to West Marine, bought one new LED bulb, took it back to the boat confirmed the fit, then ordered 3 more of the same ones online for less $$. This was a quick way to make sure I got the right thing but didn't end up over-paying for all of them. Very happy with the result.

A little more in April we had an engine room fire and did a considerable amount of damage. I have to start over with almost all new gear in ER

Interested also, a few of mine are on the fritz but they come on if you give them a smack! Thought about converting the OE Slimlines to LED but it doesn't look as easy as it sounds and bulbs are nearly as much as new lights.

I used a whole bunch of these - went around the underside of the hatch opening, along the transom, and anywhere else I anticipated wanting light. This was about 4 years ago that I did it. I've since sold the boat, but I see the boat every Fall and they're still working. https://www.oznium.com/smd-bar#photos It went from dark and dingy in there to a nice, well-lit place to hang out. :smt001

May I ask what caused the fire and how much damage was sustained?

Yes fire was caused by a leaking oil line on the turbo . A o ring let go and sprayed hot oil on the exhaust about 160 to 175 k in damage mostly cosmetic ,electrical and plumbing in ER.

Reduced energy usage, reduced heat output, and greater longevity are nice benefits, though--bulbs that last 10+ years (barring ER fires!) are a pretty wonderful thing. YMMV, of course, especially if you don't plan to keep the boat a long time. Our generator went kaput and we're really appreciating that I was converting to LED already when it was on its last legs.

I was referring to converting the original fixtures to LED vs replacing with new fixtures. An 18" T8 LED bulb is about $40 and the ballast wiring needs to be changed. The identical OEM replacement fixture is $48.

I'm well aware of the benefits of LED and have already converted the interior lighting.

there are some LED bulbs that are HYBRID style, meaning they can be used in old fixture as a replacement bulb with an existing ballast or can be used with the ballast removed and wired directly to line voltage-110. search HYBRID LED.

Robert, this is obviously a much smaller bilge than yours, but this is a short video I had made after installing the strip lights to give an idea of how they light things up. Now, in my case, it was a major improvement over the two, small, single bulb lights that were original. You already have better lighting to start with than the original setup in my 260DA, but this will at least give you an idea of the real life level of lighting of what I used and whether or not it's what you're looking for.

All Aboar'd - so very sorry to hear about your fire.

That brings to mind that we also have to be careful about what bulbs are put in the ER (or anywhere else for that matter)- have heard stories perhaps on this forum about bulbs ordered online that end up catching fire. That's why I got that first bulb at WM and went with the same brand for the others, but again you never really know.

The nice thing about these bulbs is that they do substantially increase the light in the ER beyond the OEM bulbs and they fit right in the OEM fixture.

However, I admit I still keep a flashlight in the ER for detailed work in those hard to see places. It's not like daylight in there.

Exactly why I stick with those made by Marinebeam and other vendors that meet AYBC standards. Heaven forbid that you should have an insurance claim and have it disallowed due to something not to standards whether the claim cause or not.
