Does anyone out there with a 48 Sundancer happen to know what bulbs are spec'd for the front nav/running lights? I doubt it's different year by year but I've got a 2005. I'm the second owner and went I went to change the bulbs today (one was out) I noticed they were completely different volts, watts and candlepower so I'm not sure what standard is. The SR manual for the 48 doesn't seem to specify the bulb specs. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

That's a tough one.
Best bet would be to try to determine the manufacturer (if it's not obvious on the lights, contact SR) and contact them for the proper bulb.

I'm right at the cutoff (12M, 39 ft) for the 1 nm visibility sidelights. You fall in category "B"; 12M-50M, and need 2 nm visiblity. I don't know any way to determine a replacement bulb other than through the manuf which would have tested it to be sure it meets the vis requirements.

There have been several threads related to swapping the incandescent bulbs for LED replacements which poses the same issue- confirming they're bright enough to meet the visibility requirements.

Here are the regs:

Just out of pure luck (I don't know, off hand, if your lights are Perko, or not), do any of these look like your lights? Some of them are spec'd at the 2 mile rating, some are not, so take note to that. Also, there are four pages to look through. IF you find one that looks right, click on the Spare Parts tab for bulb info.

Thanks tobnpr, I wonder if there is a chart online anywhere that relates watts and candlepower to nautical miles visibility? I'm guessing the 4CP bulbs I just put in don't reach 2nm but I've been searching online this morning and can't find any way to determine that ...

Lazy Daze, was there supposed to be a link or attachment to your post?

Thanks everyone for the help.

Sincerely,
Jason

Unfortunately a couple of them look very close (or a match), hard to tell for sure. I have the Sea Ray part numbers (1798179 is one for example), going to e-mail Sea Ray and see if they can give me a cross-reference or spare parts/bulb specs for that part.

Thanks,
Jason

Yeah, I figured it was a long shot.

It looks like that part number is just the red lens. Do you have another part number?

Part Master Inquiry

Part Number: 1798179 Description: LIGHT, NAV SIDE SS LENS CVR ONLY(RED/PRT) Retail Price: $5.50 Dealer Price:

$3.58

Unit of Measure: EA

There isn't a part number for the bulb, from what I can tell the parts involved are:

1770647 LIGHT, NAV SIDE SS HORZ 12V W/IMPRVD GASKET
1798179 LIGHT, NAV SIDE SS LENS CVR ONLY(RED/PRT)
1798182 LIGHT, NAV SIDE SS LENS CVR ONLY(GRN/STB)

I was just going to edit my my last comment to add something, but I wan't quick enough to do it before you reponded...

One thing I overlooked is that part number descriptions will rarely (if ever) list the manufacturer since Sea Ray will sometimes change the supplier of a particular part mid-model year. Which is evident by the list you just provided.

Like Tobnpr suggested, and you are doing, contacting SR is the best way. But, be sure to give SR your HIN (just in case there was a mid-model year change).

Good luck, Jason!

Thanks all. I'm sure SR can give me some guidance although I'd still love to find a chart or guide to watts/CP -> nm visibility.

Jason

The manual states 12V 10W bulbs for the front nav lights.
Now just try and find them..You can't.
Last year I noticed my port light was out while I was in Port Washington. I walked to the West Marine and the local Auto store. All the 12V 10W bulbs had twin tips.
The only thing I found were 12V 9.9W bulbs with the single base. They worked.

I can't see a brightness difference between the 10W and the 9.9w, so these are the ones on the boat and in my spare kit.

Thanks Rich, that's good information. I was able to determine from Sea Ray that this is the replacement bulb:

http://www.attwoodmarine.com/store/product/bulb-bayonet-10-watt

ie. Atwood part # 912717. What I don't know yet is what the Candle Power and visibility is, it should be 2 nm but I'm not 100% sure as I've seen where 10 watt bulbs come in different candle powers. I'm checking with Atwood on that.

Regards,
Jason

PS - You got closer at 9.9w, the replacements MM gave me are 9.3 Watts and 4 CP (Candle Power). The bad one I took out of the socket was 6 CP, that's why I am concerned about the range of these 4CP bulbs.

Wow - just learned something interesting. Atwood called me back, the replacement bulb (PN in last post) is 10 Candle Power. The generic but supposedly right bulbs I was given from my local dealer were 4 Candle Power. I'm assuming the 10 CP meets the specs for 2 nautical miles as the spec is posted on the Atwood page, which means the 4 CP isn't nearly enough. Hope this helps, I'm off to order some bulbs ...

Jason

This is the exact original OEM bulb for the red and green side light fixtures as approved to provide 112.5°.

2 Mile Bulb: 912717 Attwood

I got this bulb and it works well.

Do NOT use LED bulbs in the red and green Sidelights because they will exceed 112.5° making it a hazard for you and other boaters who will not know the orientation of your vessel. In addition, if you're in an accident, your insurance company will check the bulbs and you may have issues!

Isn't there an LED equivalent sidelight fixture that can replace the original Attwood? We keep having to replace our bulbs in our nav lights so I'm fairly certain that if there was a gasket the previous owner lost it. I would really prefer having an entirely new fixture that is well-sealed and uses LED bulbs. Any ideas?

Update - we replaced our navigation light fixtures with the Attwood LED version: http://www.attwoodmarine.com/store/product/3530

These are fairly easy to install. We did have to drill new guide holes for the screws and we had to seal the old holes.

We haven't tested the lights at night yet but they looked pretty bright even during the day. I'll be happy to have nav lights with bulbs that won't constantly burn out!
