I was wondering if some of my 460da fellow captains would share there propeller choices :thumbsup:

I am running a 23-28 with a very heavy cup 2 years ago when I had my local prop scan dealer balance them he suggested I re-pitch up 1 inch and go with less cup. It was his thought that this would give me up to 2mph increased cruise speed. :smt024:smt024

I currently turn 2600 wot cruise at 25-26 mph at 2200 rpm usually less than 1/2 tank of fuel :smt038:smt038

I am happy with my current cruising speed and economy but I need to have my props balanced this year and the re-pitch would not be too costly

The good thing is when you have to take your props in it is getting close to launch time

BRBSTA,

Interesting post because I have been wondering the same thing. To be honest I do not know what is stamped on my props but I will check next time I'm there. (We're near you probably; at A.H.C.)
In my Sea Ray owners' kit I have the following prop information: 28 X 33 Light Cup 4 Blade. Those seem like larger diameter props than other 460DA's are turning so I will check.
Our WOT is 2625 and 2640 (Aetna tachs) @ 29 mph. Cruise is 23-25 mph @ 2275. Handling around the dock is great but is the speed down if these props are large?
Interesting to see other comments.

James we are at Mac Ray how do you like the Aetna tachs what was involved with the install did it require new tach generators or were the factory ones compatible

The Aetna tachs were easy to install. I did not wish to replace the existing tachs because I think they look great (and also you would need a trim ring) so I set up a secondary location. I built a "Starboard" box on the inside of that hatch by your feet at the helm and I flip it down when running. It's not in the way at all and a quick glance down gives me both readings +/- one rpm. I'll try to post a photo sometime. The hook up was simple. Just run a shielded cable to the existing tachs and splice it in. No new sender required. You just have to set the dip switches properly for the appropriate diesel engine. The order desk at the factory was helpful.
I think I've seen your boat over at MacRay's.

I did not have many replies to the specs of fellow 460 da owners so I have assumed their are not too many 460 owners on this board or they just don't understand their props (LOL)

I have decided to revise my 23-27 heavy cup to a 23-28 med. cup I also have added Aetna Tachs to dial them in

I'm in a 2001 460 DA hard top and run factory HiTorq 23X27 with a #2 cup. on Cummins 6CTA 8.3 M3 with ZF V's at 1.772 reduction

at 1900 RPMs I'm running at 18-19 knots in saltwater, at 2100 (crusing) I'm turning 20.5 knots. MY WOT is 2550 and I run 22.23 knots. At 2150 crusing, I'm burning 1.7 gallons to the mile total burn.

In all honesty, my boat under performs the profile. I've questioned the performance, the props have been respec'ed until I'm sick of asking. The running gear is correct. The boat weighs in the slings 36K which is a little heavy but sling weight is not accurate by any means. I've run the speed at light tanks and check the revs with a laser tach at the shaft pulley. I'm not missing but a few revs from pulley to helm tack (stock).

When coming out of the well and advancing the throttles up slowly I do not blow black exhaust more than just a few seconds and when on plane I'm not straining at all. A week ending of running and my transom is still soot free so I'm not over propped as I see it..

I have two sets of wheels and both are tuned the same and performance is the same. So as I read your 26-28 knots at those rpms, I've got speed envy I'm going to take second look at my props with your specs.

BoatDiesel.com has an excellent prop analyzer program to profile your set up and predict your performance

Chad I am running 26-28 MPH at 2300 with WOT at 2650

I think I run 25mph @2200 but it has been a long winter and I need to confirm

I am adding digital tachs so I should have a good handle on the numbers soon

I have spoke with a few of my 460 pals and they are reaching my numbers pretty consistently

Cheers Ron

I concure with Ron...it has been along winter and waiting for warmer weather here in Michigan for a chance to "spool em up" again. Won't belong now (I hope)

Guys,
I just got back from the boat and checked the props. Turns out that what was in my owners' pack was incorrect. My props are 23 X 26 H cup. That makes more sense now. I am pulling just over the 2600 rpm at WOT, 30 mph. Cruising usually at 2250-2275 takes us from 22-24 mph depending on fuel load. Hope that helps.

I'm out on the hard and will splash next week. I've had a set of props re pitched and cupped from 23X27 Full Cup taken down to 23X26 Medium Cup. I'm $800 bucks hopeful my gal will move herr butt better with these new screws. Results to follow.

The props are installed and running good

23x28 med. cup

28.1 @ 2300 RPM

34.8 @ WOT 2710 RPM

I am now using Aetna Tachs ( Accurate to 1 RPM )

Both 8.3's are running identical numbers

I am impressed it seems I gained 1-2 mph @ cruise speeds

Cheers Ron

Please note I was running 23x27 and modified the 27 to 28

Ron,

I'm confused. Just with that increase in pitch your cruise speed now is faster than your former WOT? Or maybe it's the H cup versus the M cup? You've got a fast running 460 though.

Chad, I want to find out the sling weight. If I do I will let you know. I must have a heavier boat than Ron's if 29-30 is my WOT speed. Also, I cannot get past 2650 rpm, but I should be happy with that. Inaugral run in two weeks.

James

At Boat Diesel.Com, Tony has asserted for years that these engines should be propped to hit 2750 at WOT. That means the prop is pitched to the weight and hull design to get that set of Revs.

We'll see

James I was reaching apx 34mph @ 2600 now I am reaching almost 35 @ 2700+

Cruise is 28.1mph @ 2300

I need to see what 2200 will produce this seems to be my best cruise rpm

I do believe I have improved the cruise by 1-2 mph somewhere between 2200 and 2300 rpms

The introduction of the Aetna tachs has made this a little tough to compare (2) changes at one time is never a good thing
