460 Sundancer, tell me about them...

Best thread on CSR right now........good luck Jason.

We have had our 2002 460 (called a 515 here in Europe) for three seasons now and could not be happier. Ours is powered with Volvo 74TAMD 480 HP engines and once the engines were serviced the boat runs fine. When we bought the boat it had sat in a Brokers stock for 4 years.

The most important considerations when looking for one is to get the best boat you can for the money, I would have prefered the Maple interior which our second choice boat had (they were both in the same Marina, so comparisons were easy). However the boat I bought with Cherry interior had the additional options of Stern Thruster, a Dinghy Lift, factory fitted Teak cockpit flooring, twin Iso transformers, Westerbeke Sound Sheild on the Genset and a Passarelle, all great additions that would have cost plenty when new.

Both had the Volvo engines, quite common here in Europe.

Not often you can find the perfect boat, compromises usually have to be made, and I always feel that the cosmetic choices should be a little further down the list when decisions are made.

Good luck in your search

Graham

That seems to be what I am seeing. I personally like the cherry interior better then the maple. It seems the boats that have the options I am looking for are a higher price point. I have a lead on one that meets the requirements except for the lift. I don't know how invasive a lift install is for a boat like this. I don't want to hurt the boat in any way structurally or price wise.

What is the purpose of the transformers one these boats as well. Sorry for my ignorance but don't have to deal with these in the 34 ft range.

jason, transformers are a good feature since they isolate your boat from the rest of the marina when you are connected to the shore. This prevents stray currents to run through your boat and corrode your underwater gear.

Jason Pietro is right. Those Transformers are great I have one on mine, I had to because of the way the dock is wired they also save on the zincs.

The 2 460's I run for friends are both loaded, hard tops, aft enclosures, hydraulic platforms and usually an inflatable on the platform. Both also have cchin and rope anchor rodes, not all chain. Both have a noticable bow rise to the point that I have to stand up or am blind for about 10 sec. Could be that a different boat with not as many options wouldn't exhibit that much bow rise.

If you look at the engine specs on the C series engines, the 6CTA is rated at 450hp but nets 430 hp at the shaft; the 480CE is rated at 480hp but it nets 440hp at the shaft. So the difference we are talking about is 40 hp. However that 40 hp is at WOT and we don't run these boats that way. if you run at 70% load, then you only have a net gain in hp of 28 hp. In t he real world, that is going to get you about 1-2 kts more cruise speed and more fuel burned. Additionally, the CE engine is the 6CTA engine with an electronic governor and Cummins electronic fuel distribution system. That means quicker starting and maybe a little less smoke on cold starts.......bit the CE"s around me smoke just as much as the 6CTA's, which I don't find objectional, even though it is more than I am accustomed to with my Caterpillars. SMartcraft is available with CE engines, but not with 6CTA's

Down here in the real world, I wouldn't turn around for the difference between them (but would prefer the mechanical engines) and I certainly wouldn't pass on the right boat because it had one or the other engines in it.

See,I knew Frank would be able to explain in a much better, more technical way than I could. One Item to note is that My vessel doesn't have the hydraulic swim platform nor do I place a dinghy on it. This weight would definitely make a difference in performance.
Agree Frank?

My '03 has the lift and I agree with you it is a great feature. I've had jet skis and dinghy's on it and it works quite well.
I was lucky enough (read as patient enough) to find everything that I wanted on one, 100% fresh water, low hour 480CE, lift, bow and stern thruster and cherry interior.
It actually came off of Lake Erie and now sits in Austin, TX.
You'll enjoy the boat - It is a great package and will suit us fine until I find the right 55DA

Any update on your search, Jason?

C'mon Jason, don't keep us in suspense.

I've been watching this thread but didn't really have anything to add so I've just been lurking.

Curious minds want to know what's going on.

Still on the hunt as of now. Trying to find the one that meets all the requirements but just haven't found the shining star. Seen a few decent ones but maintenance has been lacking IMO.

Nice looking boat Pietro, and the price seems very reasonable. Jason a new lift would be waaay better than a 2000 with a 2000 lift!!

I know a guy who's looking to upgrade to a 56 SB. He may have to unload his 460. Super clean and very low hours. Numerous upgrades in 2014.

Good to know the one I have been chasing has not been helpful with any information or maintenance records that I have asked for. I'd appreciate some info on the boat you guys know of!

Jas, I'd be bummed you were leaving the 80's 340 frat, but Im happy for you that you can make the move up. BTW. I have a friend that is in love with the old 340's and would be VERY interested if yours happened to go up for sale.

Hi:
The 460 is a good boat, well laid-out, good looking and reliable. I have mine for sale here in FLA...a 2000 (no hardtop) but with Cummins, hydraulic swimplatform, teak cabin flooring, KVH satTV, etc. Let me know if you'd have an interest...zip me an email address and I'll send specs/pix etc.
THX Steve
