Our 1996 was run aground hard by a delivery captain. Per the surveyor report to insurer, all running gear essentially needs to be replaced except the shafts TBD. He also figures on pulling the vDrives back to ascertain if coupling plate damage etc. The yard has about a $27K estimate not including shaft replacement but pulling and measuring. Also, new stuffing box seals. Neither I nor he saw any fiberglass damage but lots of paint scrapes etc. Boat is insured for $90K and so not a total but....

Any thoughts?

Be glad no one was hurt, or worse. Take a step back, relax, and let insurance do what it does.

The 44 express bridge is one of my all time favorites. I drool every time I pass it on the way out of my marina. I'm sure if I were in your place at this moment in time I would be pretty fired up.

Ive never had to deal with this sort of issue but being thankful it isn't worse is always a good approach.

Needs a complete survey prior to any work progressing. A hard grounding could have done serious strut/shaft/hull damage.

In answer to above, a survey was done and some repairs will be TBD until struts, rudders, shafts and props are pulled. The captain is a yacht club friend and also additional insured so cant sue yourself, in effect. Boat was being returned home from the Chesapeake after we had been north.

We just came through Georgia a couple of months ago, you do have some mighty skinny water there. Hope your repairs go quickly.

If you have to eat the repair cost, once you boil it down and get serious with pricing, it looks like you have probably gotten "see if it will fly" pricing.......based on our costs on the Gulf coast.

Props - repair $750 ; replace $3000
shafts -repair $300; replace $2000
struts- replace $2000
rudders -replace $3000
shaft seals- $1000
haul out -$400
labor 2 men- 3 days x 8 hours x$100/hour= $4800

and I still come up way short of $27K + some amount yet to be determined

Did sand get sucked up into engines/genny? Check impellers, if any sign of sand engines need to be completely acid bathed and flushed. Good luck, Art

Good question. I wonder also. I will ask.

As to costs, I learned the surveyor wittled the price down to 23.5. Price does include bottom paint redo. Insurance approved payment but not sure what that means.

I assume you mean the surveyor got the yard to reduce their cost of repairs. That means the insurance company will cut you a check for that amount less your deductible. You will then will pay when work is completed to your satisfaction. BTW, you can ask the surveyor to inspect the repairs before making final payment.

If further damage is discovered as the repairs are being done you can amend your claim.

We have a spare shaft alongside the Starboard engine. It looks factory mounted. If I need a new one, any reason I shouldn't use it? Would help with deductible.
