420DA Water leak

Well, I sat patiently in the bilge waiting for the water pump to come on and no such luck. I am led to believe that the water is coming in from the outside. I have looked high and low and can not find any signs of water coming in.
The question that I would like to address now is: Does this qualify for a warranty repair and do I need to get Sea Ray corporate involved. I mentioned this defect to the dealer when I did my final inspection, they said everything would be taken care of. The boat was 17 months old when I bought it. The dealer than told me in the fall that the problem has been fixed and I just need to wait for all the water to drain back and there would not be any more water coming in. I figured I would leave the boat in heated storage over the winter and come spring I would check to see if in fact the problem was gone. As all of you know now, the problem is still there. I read a Sea Ray warranty document and it says that Sea Ray has to be notified if the dealer has tried to fix a problem and has not fixed after the first attempt.
I guess, I should give them a call and let them know as I have a feeling this thing is going to drag on.
Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks.

I had a similar situation at the begining of this season.

I put a case of water bottles in the starboard compartment under the aft bunk/sofa. It was dry when I loaded it. Over the first weekend that we were launched, I thouroughly washed the outside of the boat. I also noticed a small amount of water that was dripping from a bad hose connection at the hot water tank (located in the centre compartment under aft sofa).

Service guys replaced the hose. We took the boat out for a run, then when we got back I noticed water in the starboard compartment. I first thought that a water bottle leaked. All bottles were sealed and there was about 1 to 2 litres of water in the hold.

There wasn't any visible clues as to where this water came from. I bailed water, dried compartment and it hasn't come back yet. I have since washed the boat again and run a few more times.

Mystery?

PS. We are also in Ontario

I have bailed the water numerous times and it keeps coming back. I guess it could be stuck somewhere in the boat and keeps showing its ugly head whenever the boat moves through some serious undulations.
I am a gambling man so I wil clean it up again this weekend and say my prayers.
Which part of Ontario do you boat in?

We are in Midland.
We boated to Orillia the weekend before last. Did the 4 locks, spent the night in Orillia and went home (limited timetable). It was our first time doing the locks and it was awesome.
Spent a night at the Waubic. The fish and chips are awesome.
Drop me a line if you plan to come up to Midland.

I would definitely have your dealer follow it up, involving Sea Ray if necessary, within a given time frame.
It's much to his advantage not to have you bypass him.

We have been going up to Midland for the last few years for the Sea Ray Rendez Vous. We plan on going up to The Waubic or Driftwood Cove soon.

Let me know when you are heading this way again.

420 water leak

Steve,

I had the same in my 340DA. If the compartment stays dry when you are at the dock but gets wet after a trip it may be the water loop for the outside drain.

The sump pumps for the inside bilge and shower has a hose to the outside of the boat. This hose must have a large loop to prevent outside water form entering the hose while the boat is on plane.

Hope this helps.

David

Mares1, if that was the case where would the water end up?
I am not sure what you mean by your explanation. Can you elaborate please.

Funny thing and I dont know if I should post this in the 420DA thread but after walking down the dock and seeing a fellow 420DA owner (his boat is a 2004 model), I discovered that he had the exact problem that I am experiencing.
So now there are 2 boats with water in the aft storage compartment.

So now what ?

Sell and buy a 48 - at least I am sure your delaer hopes that's your plan :)

You had me all concerned - I checked my back compartment this weekend - phew - all dry

Cuttin Edge, do you have a bowthruster ?
And yes, my dealer has it in his plan to put me in a 48.
Still waiting for a great deal.

I have no helm time in a 48DA, so this is purely second hand.

The Cummins tech who works on my boat focuses solely on Marine Service. He has been doing Marine Diesel service for 5 years. He is a good guy and seems like a straight shooter. This spring as he was doing thermostats in my port main, he said he had worked on "a couple" 48DAs whose owners felt like the C series Cummins were not quite enough motor for the heavier, longer, wider 48DA as compared to the 420DA.

Again, not first hand.

Well, its been a few weeks and I have some news to report.
After reporting the problem to Rusty Higgins at Sea Ray Customer Service, the dealer called me with a course of action. The boat was hauled out and the bow thruster tube was re-glassed. The tech mentioned that he felt that the bow thruster tunnel was a tad to short. All thru hull fitting were also resealed. We went out on a trip yesterday and when I lifted up the hatch cover..........no water :smt038
Thanks for everyones help and suggestions. I hope that this is the last entry that I will write into this thread.

Another example of Sea Ray taking care of their customers.

Thanks Rusty

The bigger point is though - you shouldn't have had to call Sea Ray to get the dealer to do this... The Dealer should have taken care of this without some proding from the big guys...

I have learned that its the end result that is important and not the method.
I do agree with you though.

Bottom line, after cutting to the quick....
Hooray, no leak.... :smt038

Very happy that it is resolved, as it can be maddening....
