420DA C Series Cummins Estate Sale

You are correct. No idiot ragboter has backed into this boat's plow anchor at 5 knots.

This boat is identical to mine, except for the color.

Almost, except the Navigator has been replaced with a Raymarine unit that doesn't quite fit in the panel and they forgot to remove the mouse thingy in the dash.

Doesn't know how to protect a blue hull. Bare fenders will scratch the gel to death, especially smashed between the boat and the dock like that. It can be buffed, depending on the depth of the scratches, but it's a lot of work on that size boat if it's more than a couple of isolated spots.

Hello I am close to buy a new 40 sundancer diesel, and I will like to know your opinion about this model.
How is it? what can you suggest?
Thanks
Rob

I have never run a 40 Sundancer diesel. I guess this boat has QSB 425s-5.9L inline six Cummins. Ought to get up and go, but again, I have no helm time in the boat and as such can't render opinions on performance.

Sea Ray has long ago figured out the mid-sized Sundancer and they don't make many mistakes. The 40DA is no doubt, a beautiful boat and has been pouplar, but for some reason, most of those sold in our area are quickly traded for a 44 or 48DA. I suppose the reason may be because this boat feels more like the old 380DA than a 40 ft boat.

If I had any concerns about the diesel 40DA it would be the engines. The Cummins base 5.9L block has been around for years and is a very good design. I am concerned about how Cummins is getting the power up to 380-425 hp. In addition to electronic engine controls, it appears they are depending upon RPM's to get the hp up to that level. I remember when the 300 hp 5.9L engine turning @ 2600rpm was stressed and easily overheated in boats this size and larger. I wouldn't be honest if I didn't tell you that turning the 5.9 at 3000 to 3400 rpm didn't give me concerns about longevity and servicability in the future.

Thanks soo much for your help! this boat actually comes with CUMMINS QSB 425, Horse Power: 407. But what you says is true as I can see there are many of those 40DA on trade i guess this boat is not soo good. I will try to check and go for a big ones such as 44DA.
I know we love Sea Ray, but some body have expirience about another manufacturer such as Azimut, Marquis? how is the boat performance between Azimut and sea Ray?
Thanks
Robert

The Marquis is an amazing running boat if you are talking about the 40/42 I run one for a couple in my Marina occasionally.

I can't speak for the Azimut or the 40 Sundancer but I have run quite a few different 420/44 DA's with different power and its an awesome boat too. The Sea Ray is a little more "Traditional" if you could call it that over the ultra modern Marquis look. Both are beautiful in my opinion, it comes down to personal preference.

I guess that's why they make so many different styles... I think that one is fugly.

I know of a 2009 420 Marquis SC with a year and half warranty left on it coming to the market very soon.

Sea Ray stopped making the 44DA after the 2008 production. They make a 43DA for 2009 which replaces the 44DA. The 43DA is a much inferior boat, in my opinion, since it only is available with the unproven Mercury Zeus drive. Mercury Marine has a very well known history of releasing products to the market well before all of the bugs have been worked out, leaving customers to suffer with the problems of these insufficiently engineered systems. Merc rushed the Zeus into production once they saw how popular Volvo's IPS drive was becoming. There's a maxim in engineering, "You can have it good, fast, or cheap. Pick any two." Merc always chooses cheap and this time it is pretty obvious they chose fast. Guess which one was ignored... again.

If you're buying new, that leaves you with a leftover SeaRay 44DA with V-drives, or a 48DA with V-drives if your budget can take the hit. Otherwise, you're looking at another manufacturer's inboard or Volvo IPS boats. I kinda like the Regal 4460 with IPS. Decent performance and layout. Decent performance meaning 25GPH @ 26 knots which slightly beats the 1 nautical mile per gallon benchmark -- IE: very good. Like Sea Ray they've been doing pretty well with customer satisfaction and don't tolerate dealers with crappy customer service. The IPS drives have been on the market for about 4 years now and have a good service record. They are also pretty efficient. A 40' Regal with the small D6 400 IPS cruises at 25 knots while burning 23 gph. The Formula 45 with the larger D6 600 IPS will cruise at 28 knts burning 32 gph.

Formula isn't a bad boat either, but I don't like the interiors, your opinion may differ on that. Also you have to watch out for the Formula Gimmick. I mean Formula Advantage. They overcharge for the boat so that they can buy down the loan.

Best regards,
Frank
