This weekend a new problem arose. My westerbeke 8.0 TBD generator began to leak what appears to be water. Upon further inspection, the probelem seems to be coming from the right rear of the generator, there was a steady stream of water while the unit was running, and no stream when the unit was turned off. Based on the illustrations of the genset, it looks lile that is the area where the sea water pump is...so whether its a cracked hose, loose hose, etc...the problem is actually getting to it to figure out the cause. This got me to thinking that I should learn how to get access back there anyway so that I can change my own impellers when necessary. Has anyone with a 420AC found a good way to sercice the back of their genset ?

Thanks in advance.....
Jeff

Have 420ac went in storage room in front of stairs and cut a hole put a water tight hatch 14" X 24" you have too move ac box on the wall cut a small hole and look nothing else back there sea ray should have done this five min to change the pump

Storage room ? Are you talking about the laundry room ? And if so, are you talking about cuttong a hole at the back of the lower left storage cabinet?

He's talking about the place your spare props and salon a/c unit is. Access hatch by the panel.

really ? my salon ac unit is nderneath the couch by the tv in the salon. unless that is the ac unit for the aft stateroom, and i just dont actually know where the ac unit for the salon is.... and would make no sense, because the generator is nowhere near there.

are you talling about the small access panel in the floor of the salon in front of the breaker panel?

gen hatch 5.jpggen hatch 4.jpggen hatch 3.jpggen hatch 3.jpggen hatch 2.jpggen hatch 2.jpg

Need to move AC control box cut small hole there is wiring harness at the top in engine room cut from there down to bottom and the good part now you can get to the waste tank sending unit as well as the starter on gen set the water pump is very easy to get to after that like I said Sea Ray Should Have Done This

Twyant,
Hi, just curious does your genset have a sound shield? I do not and have been looking all over the internet for one, Westerbeke said they do not handle them any more. Been toying around with the idea of doing the system from Southern insulation. We run the genset alot when on the hook, would be a little quieter at night.
Maybe a stupid question, I have 5 batteries, two starboard, two port and one at the genset. Can I assume that the one at the genset is dedicated to it, two of the other are for starting the deisels and the other two are house batteries?

Thanks, still learning the boat.

Tony

No do not have sound shield but added muffler and insulation have 5 battery two for port two for starboard one for gen set the house runs off starboard two battery’s

Twyant....great pics...wish i had waited to see them before i tackled that job. I ended up mounting a 10x15 bomar hatch similar to yours...the difference, i mounted it horizontal instead of vertical...but acheives the same end result. Followed the rest of your instructions to the letter, worked out great. Thanks for the help ! Jeff

Btw...where did you add a muffler to your genset...I think i already have one that sits in front of the port engine...sort of circular...but maybe you added one elsewhere....

Twyant, thanks for the help will also be installing the hatch & look into replacing the muffler; also looking at puttng new sound insulation under thwe salon floor. We are finally going to take the boat out for a long weekend, work has been getting in the way to much. Enjoy the holiday!

inline after the circular one it helped alot its like 6" around X 16" Long

I would love to know exactly what muffler you added!

And that access panel is a superb idea. Wish I had known that idea before I replaced my Salon A/C unit this last weekend.

Have you had any similar ideas on how to get to the stbd water pump?

no stbd water pump can be a pain change the impeller last week about a hour job and its tight I am 6'3" And 250 Lbs best way I found Is put impeller first then put in the key

no have third state room you must have storage room moved ac control box AC is under bed with hot water heater in third room
