420 AC engine access

I'm looking at a 2001 420 AC with volvo's but have run up on a show stopper. Only one, center, of the three hatches to the engine compartment can be opened. The outboard hatches over the engines hit the base of the bolted down salon couches and cannot be lifted without a lot of work. This seems like a huge design flaw. How do owners get around this and access their engines. Thanks for your response. R

I have a 2001 Sea Ray 420 Aft Cabin with 3126 Cats and didn't know Sea Ray ever put Volvo's in this hull so sorry I can't help you. True my main engine room access is through one centered hatch and only if I ever had a major engine issue would I ever expect to remove the furniture to gain addition engine room access. Few boats with enigines under the salon floor have great access with out much more removal work that tpical engine room service access. Post some pictures when you have time.

OK, thanks. As I mentioned I'm thinking of putting an offer on this 420 AC. Other than the limited engine access how have you enjoyed the boat. Would you recommend it or choose another. May do something this week.

My main access is via the center hatch but I open all three when I am checking fluids etc. I have to remove the middle sofa cushion to open the starboard hatch.

We love the boat and have owned it since August 2007. Not many boats have more usable space than AC. Are you sure you wern't looking at a Carver as they use Volvo's or was this boat maybe repowered? Anyone else know of any Sea Ray's with Volvos or am I just plan ole nuts?

I concur. Love the boat and never heard of Volvos in a SR.

Volvos were a factory option back then. I've never seen an AC with them, but I know of several 460DA's with Volvo power. Complicating the matter was a late-09's marketing/parts/maintenace partnership between Detroit Diesel and Volvo, so if you looked into the ER of a Volvo-powered boat, the first thing you saw on a Volvo engine was a big Detroit Diesel label.

I can't answer anything specific about the boat - it's kinda hard to get one of these delivered into Allentown, PA! We're only contracted for up to 35'. But, Volvo's have, indeed, been options over the years. Not every year, but it was for the year in question (and that model), at least.

My friend has a 2000 420Ac With The Volvos in it great running boat helped him change a water pump impeller on Starboard motor one time and was a chore do know his boat with the volvos will run 30 knots wot and I think they are 450 hp. I know he had to remove the steps and the sofa to do a lot of his maintenance but changed the hatch configuration to be able to do so without. have the cats in mine and different salon design the 2001 was changed up in side and the bridge controls are on the Port side instead of the middle and the center bed room area laundry room is no longer there just washer dryer in the wall.
