420/44 DB Owners Club

There is a 42 on yacht world that has the modified transom and railing around the platform. The cockpit space is huge

It does open up a lot of extra space. My module is being moved aft 2.5’ and reshaped to have a walkthrough on either side. I’ve attached a pic to see what a difference it makes.

Now for that chine slap .......

The only thing I really dislike with my 44 is the chine slap while at rest. I know most boats suffer from it and yes it’s all a part of being on a boat. But the wife is suffering and its too expensive getting a new one (wife that is..) so we are sleeping in the guest cabin now and I’d really like to fix this..

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

she’s in getting the transom module extended and I’m thinking of getting the shipwrights to look (just look..) at filling in the chines or other options... Heard this has worked on other boats without any noticeable changes to ride or water spray over the bow
I actually hate it too but the wife finds it soothing. Have gotten up and slept in the salon when too loud. Thought this was just part of sleeping on a boat.

It is and it isn’t. When there is a slight chop it can be very noisy. You are lucky your wife likes it... Mine on the other hand is a light sleeper and isn’t patient enough to try and get used to it. Anyway, just investigating at this stage.

I am a light sleeper but I wait all winter to hear that sound. It helps me to sleep
I hate it because there is no pattern to it. Just random slapping. Fortunately it’s more annoying when tied to a dock. I’ve gone bow in at our home slip at times to avoid it. But barely notice it when swinging on the hook.

Random slapping!!! LOL!!

It’s a nice looking fridge btw. Well worth the plunge :D ...
Took some measurements this weekend. Seems like it should fit. Might need to shave a bit off the opening.

And as luck would have it, the microwave packed it in so I need to remove the fridge anyways to get it out.

Not many suppliers for Vitrifrigo...

I would look at one with the QSC motors but they all seem to be at quite a high price these days.
One of the key reasons I went for the QSCs is how cleanly they run. You almost never smell diesel fumes, even at startup or under hard power. No smoke, essentially no soot.

We are on our first trip with a two hour cruise each way. I do miss my 500 QSCs for sure! These Volvo TMADs are dirty smelly SOBs in comparison. I think because of the large, three story tall transom we get one hell of a station wagon affect that compounds things as well.

Can’t wait to see the end result.

One thing I have been contemplating is a convection oven/microwave combo.

Be nice to have an oven from time to time..

I miss mine too, but so far, these 6CTAs are holding their own. I really do not miss all of the engine data that SC provided. Crank these up, check the vitals, and just enjoy the run….

I think, most if not all, of the 40+ foot SRs came with the convection/microwave combo. Ours in this boat was changed to a pure microwave and we are contemplating getting the combo as well.

I do miss the data as well, all I have is factory analog gauges on the panel now. Part of me enjoys not obsessing over the data and the other part is itching to install an all inclusive data package to display on the MFDs. For now I’m gonna stick with the “ignorance is bliss” concept. I’ll set the throttles to a comfortable speed and what ever the engines drink, so be it. I used to try to eek out every MPG I could when we first got into the ‘big boats’ . We were running consistent 100 hrs or more a year. Now we are more like 30 hours so the cost of fuel is insignificant compared to the rest of the cost of ownership.

There aren't many options for convection microwaves that can be enclosed in a cabinet and will fit the available space. I only found a couple, then availability becomes an issue...

You are 100% correct. The OEM Tappan that we had in the 44DB had the turntable quit turning. Ok, we will just buy a new one….The “hole” above the refrigerator on the 44 is not forgiving meaning there is no room to enlarge it. I finally gave up and repaired the OEM one. Now I am fixing to go on a hunt for one for our 420…

One thing…the vent fan and sticker that says to run it whenever anything is running in the galley is telling the truth. Turn your convection oven on and the vent fan and go outside and feel the air coming out from behind the convection oven…

Does anyone have the specs for the led replacement bulbs for the mast light?
