I was wondering if anyone might know what the ram capacity is for the hydraulic steering system on a 400db

I can't find any literature on it to verify what it is as I would like to fit an Autopilot to my boat.

SmartPilot System for hydraulic steering systems with ram capacities between 4.9 and 10.5 cubic inches (80cc - 172cc) States for medium sized boats (inboard)

if someone might know it would be appreciated

regards

Here is a way you can get an approximate value:

Most steering cylinders are double rod so the volume is equal on both sides of the steering cylinder piston. Therfore you need to determine the effective area of the cylinder. To do this, determine the estimated bore size of your cylinder. You can measure the cylinder barrel or housing the piston travels in and deduct about a 1/2 inch for the wall thickness of your cylinder.

Take that value and find how many square inches it is (diameter squared x .7854) will give you the square inche area of the piston face. (assuming the bore/piston is round)

Now you need to deduct the rod diameter because it consumes area inside the cylinder.
Measure the rod diameter and calculate the square inch area of the rod using the same method above.

Now subtract the rod area from the piston area and this will give you an approximate effective area for your cylinder.

Multiply your effective area x the cylinder stroke in inches, and this will give you the total approximate cubic inches for your cylinder.

To get an exact value, you would need to tear the cylinder apart to measure the bore diameter.....or call a dealer and see if you can pry it out of them.

The ram capacity is listed on the actual cylinder itself. The cylinder is located between both rudder posts. Look for a round tube about 15 inches long and about 2 inches thick. You wil see a couple of small hydraulic hoses attached to it.

A boat your size will most likely require the medium size autopilot system.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys,

Trying to either of these suggestions is really difficult. The amount of room on the portside you would need to be about 2feet tall..I can see the hydraulic hoses on that side thats about it. Port side has slightly more room but marginal..

The thing with the 400db is that there is a generator then the water thank in the way then on either side we have the underwater exhaust drums in the way as well.

I'll try for the label
