2005 185 sport overheats at 3000 rpm. The alarm comes on and I lower the rpm and the temperature goes back down to 170. If i keep the rpm around 2500 to 2700 rpm, the temperature is fine and stays around 170. I tried to run it at 3000 rpm in neutral and did not overheat. I cruise around the marina at 1000 rpm and all is fine. Any idea what is my problem?

Check to make sure nothing is covering the ports on the drive for the water intake, check the thermostat, could be your raw water pump or even engine circulating pump. Ever run it dry? When was the last time the raw water pump was serviced?

I agree. If you haven't replaced the outdrive water pump in a while, that sounds like the culprit.

thanks for the reply, I will be checking the thermostat tomorrow. I will check all i can without taking the boat out of the water first. I suspect it is the outdrive pump though, I checked my service records and does not say anything about impeller replacement. The boat is always in salt water since I purchased it new 5 years ago. The only time it comes out is once a year for bottom painting and service.
