When turning the key to crank the engine, how fast should it start? I fully expected a new boat/engine to start with barely bumping the key. Mine has to turn over 2-3 seconds before cranking. Is this normal?

That's about right. Especially if it's been sitting for a while.

By sitting I meant overnight or something. As opposed to "turn it off, pick up the skier and restart right away". But, yes, they don't always start in just one or two rev's. Does it sound like it's cranking at a normal speed (otherwise possible weak battery or loose connections)?

Edit: "Puffs" (compressions) is maybe a more accurate way of stating things than "rev's".

Yes, turns over great...just have to spin it over several times before it cranks. My buddy will be bringing his boat with the same engine this weekend, will see how his does!

Don't worry if it's a little different. No two are exactly the same. If it's spinning fast and running well, chances are everything is fine. I can tell you, from experience, that what you're describing sounds perfectly normal.

I have a 1990 180 BR, it has a Mercruiser 4.3 in it that was a Jasper rebuilt that was put in about 4 years ago. It does the same...

I recall reading something about our more modern marine engines that are computer controlled actually delaying the activation of spark and fuel when you hit the starter. This would minimize the chances of severe engine damage in the case of water ingestion since it would only be the force of the electric starter motor making the internal parts move vs combustion in another cylinder. If so, it could explain the extra "cranking" upon startup. Mine is also slow to fire, but consistent.

Anyone able to confirm this - or did I just dream it??
