2018 383 Mag Stroker w/Bravo III Drive
Hi,
Just got a 2002 240DA with a new (3.5 hours) 383 Mag Stroker in it (from 2018, as best I can tell) and I am wanting to hook the engine up to SmartConnect so that I can get data on my Garmin.

I have looked over the engine from all sides I can find and I haven't been able to find the necessary 10-pin connector. There's a 4-pin on the top that the inspector used to hook up to his computer to get data, but I can't find a 10-pin, like I think I need for something like:

Any suggestions on where to look? I took a ton of pictures of the various sides of the engine and have them at:

if that would be helpful.

Thanks so much!

Kirby

Kirby - it seems your boat is pre-Smartcraft; 2003 was the year introduced I believe. This would be the harness to find if you do have Smartcraft; connector "m" is that 10-pin you are looking for.

Hi ttmott,

Thanks for your reply. According to the manual ( https://owners-resources.searayweb.com/owners-manuals-files/2002_240 Sundancer_240_Sundancer.pdf page 30) apparently SmartCraft was an option for 2002 but you are inherently correct that my boat does NOT appear to have SmartCraft.

I'm totally new to this (like, really, really new) but the way I was understanding it was that if I have a 383 Mag Stroker from 2018, it should have the harness (item c in your picture, I think) and I can install a NMEA 2000 starter kit and hook my Garmin UHD 94sv up to the NMEA 2000 backbone and be able to display engine data on my Garmin. So, basically, ignore the fact that my 240DA doesn't have SmartCraft and make my own network....

Am I totally off base?

Hey Kirby, look towards the aft (bell housing side) on top. If I remember right, that's where it's located. I think it's purple colored.
My 2002 300DA is pre SmartCraft so I use vessel mobile on a 10" tablet on the dash. I love the data!

Hi,

So if I'm figuring things correct...

This would appear to be items b/c in ttmott's diagram.

And, from the pics I had posted from my engine..

It would appear that I DO have a harness like that.. and I need to look for a purple 10-pin plug that corresponds to part 'm' on the diagram.

Joe, tell me more about your setup. Are you just using an iPad or Android device? How do you have it all being run? Are you using the tablet for any other chartplotter type functions?

Thanks!

Kirby

Have you checked behind the helm gouges to see if the SC junction box is there?

I'm using an older Samsung 10" tablet. It's able to split screen the vessel view data and Navionics.
The setup I have is: a cable comes off of each engine to junction boxes and data gets bluetoothed out. I could also run a cable to the dash to power any SmartCraft gauges, but I'm not so equipped.

Somewhere on this forum is a complete list with part numbers.

Very clever using the old tablet

After much digging and maneuvering around in tight spaces (which I'm sure everyone can relate to) I managed to find the connector.

As someone above suggested, it was on the transom side of the engine and the connector was hidden down in amongst the various tubes and wires. I actually managed to find it via Google Photos built-in OCR function. I've taken dozens of pictures of the engine area and discovered via some Youtube video that the searched-for purple connector had the 'CAN LINE' label attached to it. I did a search for those words in Google Photos and it actually found a photo I had taken of the back of the engine that had those words in it. The connector itself was well hidden and squished down in, but the label was in the photo. Amazing.

I have ordered a single engine, under cowl version ( 8M0173704 ) of the Smartcraft Connect ( https://www.mercruiserparts.com/mercury-mercruiser-98-8m0173704-scconn-u ) as well as a NMEA starter kit, which, I think, is what I will need to get everything connected to my Garmin.
