Would appreciate some guidance on buying the best pump to change oil thru the diptstick? Want to use same pump for transmission fluid and generator oil change as well.

I use the Jabsco PortaQuick. Works great. Unfortunately the bucket does not hold hte oil from both engines. Wish it were big enough to safely hold 3 gallons. So I have to pump over int a container after the first engine and genny before I can finish the second main.

Same.

For the genny, I found a tube that fits the drain. I put a jug next to the stringer and drain the oil into there. It's quick and easy.

Carter,

Thanks. How long have you been using this one? Where do you place the bucket while pumping out? How many quarts of oil do you get out and how long does it tkae to do each engine?

Do you use it to change out the tranny and the genny too?

I also use the protaQuick for the genny. Just attach the small plastic hose and insert it into the genny drain hose, then suck it empty.

Funny is my genny only holds 2 qts. to full on the dipstick, not 2.5 as indicated in the manual and I am sure I am not leaving anything in the oilpan when sucking it out.

2 Years for me. I place the bucket near the bottom of the bilge, in the back - just find a spot that works for you. I get 9 quarts out per side. Run the engines at 1000 RPM for 15 minutes to ensure they are warm enough. I also use it for the tranny. You suck that out through the tranny filter area.

I put the bucket on top of the egine covers and hook the hose directly to the dipstick pipe. I get every last drop out of the engines since the refill to full level takes 9 quarts with filter change.

I also do the transmissions with the small plastic hose attached. I use the fill hole. and get consistently 4 qts. per side out of the transmissions, then refill with 4 qts. respectively.

I bought a PEL-PL-6000 Oil Change Pump 6.0 Liter capacity for $42.49 from wholesalemarine.com. This is a hand pump that creates a vacuum to suck out the oil. From my research, it was the best choice for the money of any oil changing kits. It is clean and easy to use...

Not if you have to pump close to 20 qts. of oil though :smt021

Hey Jim,

I think Hampton and others beat me to your question...+1 to them.

I took an old hot rod electric fuel pump, a piece of 3/8" fuel line, couple of fittings, a piece of 5/8" heater hose and the female end of a garden hose repair kit, and made my own. Put two alligator clips on the wires and you can pump from anywhere to anywhere. I use empty water conditioner jugs (from the pool maintainence) to catch the oil.

A little late to this thread, but +2 for the Jabsco Portaquick. In the past I have used the garden hose attachment, but this fall I am going to try the small hose that in through the dipstick.

I used to use an electric one but it broke of course. So I bought a merc cruises hand pump, it screws right on to the dip stick tube. If you get the engine nice and hot before you pump it out. It actually olny takes 10-15 pulls on the pump. Now it will never break and i get a little arm exercise in the process.
