I've got an '01 340 Sundancer with 8.1 Horizons. The port side muffler is leaking from around the base. The muffler looks like it is comprised of a round cylinder with a top cap and bottom cap fitting. Water is leaking, only when the engine is running, and escaping from between the bottom cap and the cylinder portion.

It looks like it is fiberglassed but I could be wrong. I was considering putting some heat resistant sealant/silicone to fix it.

Does anyone have any insight on the problem? Hopefully my boat will still be in the slip after Earl comes through town.

Thanks in advance.

Pretty sure Centek made them for Sea Ray. You should still be able to purchase a replacement. They are constructed of a special heat resistant resin, it's not the same fiberglass layup as your boat. And no, a silicone band-aid would be a really bad idea. That leak will get worse. How badly do you want to sink your boat or have carbon monoxide gas throughout the engine room and also potentially the cabin?

Yes, but it surely could be repaired professionally.

Risk / benefit ratio? There are somethings where saving a few dollars makes sense. I don't think the exhaust system on a gas engine boat is one of them.
