Greetings,

Received a call today about a 2001 340 with 6.2 engines that is for sale. Any pros and cons I should be aware with this year of boat and engines? Apparently the boat is immaculate. Engine has 600 hours. Has a generator, which I don't think I really care about.

Thank you

I'm sure a bunch will chime in. I can't speak for the 6.2's, but many say it's underpowered for the 340. I personally can't see any less than 454 or 8.1's. I can go out with 10 people and get on plane , cruise at the same speed as being by myself. Re-sale won't be as good also.

Knew a CSR member in my area that actually had the same model and found it to be more than adequately powered. He ended up selling the boat when his lifestyle changed, but while he owned it I ran into him on my travels. The boat looked immaculate and he was always mentioning how pleased he was with both the performance and the better fuel economy the 6.2's offered. They just don't have the same top speed, but he was in no major rush.

Thanks gents. Looked at the boat today and put an offer on it. The boat is 15 years old and looks brand new - amazing.

As an owner of a 99 330 w/ 6.2's I can attest to their performance. Properly propped and tabbed you'll be fine.

As far as the year and model I can tell you that if properly maintained it is a very good boat that will continue to serve you for a long time. Engines are a more personal issue.

check for soft spots on the deck from water intrusion into the wooden core from inadequate bedding of the deck hardware and be sure the exhaust on the engines has been changed from the original 'log' style to the 'water lift muffler' style....

not sure why there are so many people that believe the 6.2's to be underpowered for this boat...I have the 6.2's and they perform very well for our style of boating...the small block 6.2's make basically the same power as the 454 big blocks but just at a higher rpm......

yes....that is the water lift muffler design.....

you mentioned in your original post you may not care if the boat has a genny or not....not sure where you are located but if you need either AC or heat to extend your boating season you will be glad you have the genny...and it looks like you have the Westerbeke genny just like mine which runs very quiet and seems to be very reliable....
