Earlier today as I was getting on plane, my port motor free revved and I fell off plane. The engine showed good temp and pressure, starts up and seems to run fine, just doesn't seem to go into gear, forward or reverse. When I shift that tranny, I hear an "air sucking" noise but it doesn't go into gear. Shift linkage looks good, fluid level looks good. Any ideas short of a bad transmission?

Is the fluid clear red or dark red/drown? I suppose you may have stripped the input spline or the pump may have failed.

It looks dark red / brown.

Not good. It should be clear/red. The clutch packs may be shot requiring a rebuild. I would attempt a fluid change and filter change/cleaning to see if it helps.

Transmission was the in fact bad. Back in the water today and running well. I had them replace the oil cooler on the starboard tranny along with an oil change. Two weeks to get it done, which I'm forever grateful for. This time of year nobody has time to do anything. FYI to all, there were no signs of this trans going bad. It went all at once while getting on plane.
