340 SUNDANCER THREAD

I thinking of upgrading the sound system on my 2000 340 Sundancer. Two questions:
1) How hard will it be to run a NMEA 2000 cable from the stereo head located starboard behind the dinette to the helm? Thinking of connecting it to a Garmin GPSMAP 742 for control.
2) How hard would it be to run a HDMI cable from the stereo head to the TV located portside between the master berth and the sink?

Any tips would be appreciated.

TIA.

Steve

1. running a cable from the head unit to the helm is not that bad.....just remove the head unit and the storage bin beside the captain's seat and you can see the wire chase....removing the seat is easy also.....you may be able to use a wire snake threaded thru the openings for the existing wires....I had trouble doing that due to the expandable foam used to seal the hole so I just cut a 1" hole above the wires to thread the new cables through....

I used the space behind the storage bin to house the new amps for my stereo upgrade I did several weeks ago....

2. can't help you with that one....

the job of running new cables goes MUCH easier if you have two people.....one to control the wire snake and the other to locate and pull the snake out of the destination opening.....

Echo Cliff - head unit wiring is super easy when you remove the storage rig next to the drivers seat. And pull the seat off.

I bought all the wires to run HDMI from the TV location across to the aft cabin and never ended up doing it. I couldn't find a non-invasive way to get across the boat. Cutting into the compartment under the bed was about the only thing I could come up with.

Cutting into the bed dompartment is what I was thinking also... Looking at a Fusion head unit that has DVD capability...

I ran wires from galley TV to garbage can outside by the cockpit sink to mount a tv. I did it a while ago I believe I pulled the cockpit ice maker/refrigerator out and ran a snake forward along the water line and it came out right by galley TV. I will check tomorrow if I snaked forward in engine compartment or from behind cockpit refrigerator. I had to cut a small hole between cockpit refrigerator and garbage can bulk head . Im pretty sure it was run behind the refridge. Then I believe you can go over arch and work your way forward on starboard side to radio.

So I pulled the stereo head unit off today. All the cables run towards the bow. Speaker, power, etc.

Looking at the cabinets. From left to right there are 4 compartments/doors... The head unit is behind door 3 and the cables run behind compartments 1&2. Looks like I can take off a panel in the back of the rear closet to access cabling.

Any further thoughts on running the NMEA 2000 cable to the helm?

Remove the panels in both closets, 2 screws in the crease, remove the panels above the port holes above the bed on both sides, screws in the crease. Use a push rod from stereo location pushing towards the bow to the closet, to the anchor rode compartment, across anchor rode compartment to small opening back into the port side above the bed toward the port closet, across the closet to the tv space. This will take a 50' hdmi cable. Don't go cheap and test it before u pull it 1/2 way around the boat. Took me a few hours to do by myself.

Did the same thing. Works, but a long run. Also be aware that the cable running through the anchor rode compartment will be exposed to whatever comes up on your anchor rode. May wNt to invest in some protective tubing for the hdmi cable and make sure to tie it in tight to avoid getting it tangled in the rode.

has anyone added a hand rail to the back side if the Radar Arch? The oldder 330s have a built in one, and the newwer 340 has one on the outside. But seems like you coulc bolt on on the back side of the arch that was alot more use full, gettin gup to the walkway.

A rail on the back side of the arch would interfere with the camper canvas zipper on my boat....your canvas may be different...I don't seem to have too much issue using the hand rail on the outside of the arch....I can grab the rail while standing in the cockpit then step up to the side deck easily...

I dont have canvus up unless random rain storm, so not worried about that part, but woul dbe more usefull. I know my self, and others have made comments like, why did they remove that. the one on the outside does not help you once behind it. I am thinking the same one thats there just on the backside.

Should be pretty easy to do....you might be able to remove the speaker and/or the pad on the arch to reach inside the arch to get to the nuts/washers of the mounting bolts.....when I installed the mount fo my TV on the arch I had some difficulty getting to the nuts of the mounting bolts....the walls of the arch are thick so not a lot of space inside....

Interesting in the thick walls, I would not be expecting that. and yes I assumed I could reach the 2 bolts from the speaker. Who knows..

I willbe running some ROmex from the outlet on port up and over arch to install another 110 outlet under driver seat area...

The corners of the arch are the thickest part.....

I have been thinking about adding some additional 110VAC outlets and 12VDC outlets and 5V USB outlets around the helm and cockpit as well.....I also have an unused 2,000 watt inverter and was thinking about installing some 110VAC outlets that are powered by the inverter.....

Anybody know on the dash panels left (ACC FWD, ACC AFT ) Right side (ACC) if these buttons control anything or are just futures when adding electronics?

Looking at getting back into boating as I now live in San Diego again... 2004 to 08 340 seems like a doable boat on the bay and for coastal cruising. Question: How durable are the (ZF) Transmissions on these V Drives.. what service do you need to do to them? I figure changing Trans Fluid once every 300 hours. I assume from the threads V Drives are the ONLY way to go docked year around in salt water??? Any help most appreciated!!! Divers that change zincs inwater and clean the bottom of your boat... what a concept!!!

you should consider moving this question to the thread in the link below for more details.....this thread is for the generation of 340 boats prior to the years you are looking at.....the two generations have some similarities but also have some differences.....

good luck....
