Hello All

I have the upgraded Cockpit Audio System on my 340da... stopped working... any idea where the cockpit amps are mounted???

Thanks
Kenji

I just completed a whole audio/video upgrade and added an amp. If you are looking for the factory amps they are behind the head unit in the control panel closet.

You have to unscrew the panel and take the whole thing off. The amps are mounted to the stringer on the starboard side. Kind of a pain to get to so have all your components ready if you are replacing the amps or upgrading so you only take it off once.

Hope that helps

Ok, so by "head unit" you mean the stereo? My stereo is in a cabinet above the seating area with the table. Where would the amps be? Are you saying that they are in the closet to the right of the seating area? I just installed a new sony stereo and a MB quart amp with Kicker speakers. I did not see any amp. I installed the amp on the back panel of the closet in the mid state room. I still can't figure out the wiring for the two stereo switches at the cabin steps that control the on and off for the cabin and the cockpit. I have a few extra blue wires that are behind the Stereo unit that appear to be coming from the two switches. However, they are not marked. I was hoping one would be to turn the amp on and off. Every time I crank up the volume I blow the Stereo switch. I currently have the amp running into the power wire for the stereo head unit and I think it is to much of a draw mwith the amp on it.

Thanks
Steve

Keep in mind that I am in a 2003 340 so it may differ a bit. Usually the amps are not far from the head unit. Do some searching and remove some panels and you should have no trouble finding it.

Let me know if you can't and I will get the electronic diagrams for you to locate it.

Good luck!

The blue wires do come from the on/off switches. Yes, you are drawing too much power from that tiny wire. Most amp additions include a heavy, 4 ga or thicker (lower ga) wire directly from the battery and through a 30A or so fuse. The ground needs to be just as big. Sounds like your stereo location is different from what I am used to, so I can't help you there.

I installed the amp in the closet next to the dining area almost under the steering and gauge area. I did find a breaker in the compartment under the steering wheel area that says "stereo amp" it appear to be pretty darn close to where I have hung the amp. I wonder if I can run a 4 gauge wire directly to that breaker from the amp. I would assume that it would be enough to not have the power shut off at higher volume.

I also removed the switches for the cockpit and cabin shutt offs and the wires behind were blue. However when I put a test light to them, I had no power to anywhere on any of the switches. I wonder where it is supposed to get a power feed too.
