Our 1995 330DA has a deep cycle battery for the starboard cranking battery. It's been turning over slower and slower so I replaced it this weekend with a marine cranking battery. The new battery would not even turn the engine over. I had to use the emergency switch to pull power from the port side to get it to turn over. Then, with a warm engine, I shut it down and tried to turn it over again. It still would not turn over the starboard engine.

The port side is our house and port cranking, which has 2 deep cycle batteries. The port engine spins right over, fast, no issues.

So, for the 330 folks out there, is your starboard cranking battery a deep cycle or cranking battery? Anyone know what type came out of the factory?

Thanks

Greg, something's not right. I'd investigate a bad battery or bad connection.

In most cases, the factory doesn't install the batteries - the dealer does. Logically speaking, this calls for a cranking/starting battery.

The starboard engine's battery powers the engine solely. It does not run any house loads. Mine is a cranking battery. Actaully, all of mine are cranking batteries. I run the genny if I'm going to be out for a long time.

You need to perform a voltage test. Check the voltage of the battery with no load and when cranking. If you have less than 10 VDC at the terminals with the engine cranking, then the battery is weak. If you have a greater voltage, perform a voltage drop test on both the positive and negative sides.

A cheap voltage drop test is to crank the engine for a few seconds. Then carefully feel each connection on both the positive and negative sides. Be very careful. A warm or hot connection means a high resistance connection. If the resistance is high enough and the current draw was also pretty high, you can burn yourself on the bad connection.

Best regards,
Frank C

Sounds like a bad connection or cable <or a defective batt>. I have 3 deep cycles on mine. My strb batt also starts the genset.
