This weekend the port transmission (v-drive) appears to have gone. Symptom was a sudden and severe shaking. I came off plane, and the shaking stopped but starts up every time I get over 2000 rpm. Went underwater to check prop and shaft, and all seems fine and I have not hit anything. I rotated both props. Starboard is smooth. The port turns but has an obvious binding feeling to it. I am about to pull the transmission and send it off for rebuild, but thought I would check the forum to see if anyone has similar experience.

Thanks

Bob V.

I might be having a transmission problem too and was wondering what you found. Yesterday at cruising speed I lost all thrust on the starboard side. No vibration or sounds. At idol the tranmission seems to work fine. I might have lost the prop and will find out tomorrow.

If you pulled your Vdrive, assuming that is what you have, what was involved?

Bob, I'd be sure to check the cutlass bearing before unbolting anything in your engine room!

If there's play, and since you detected some binding, then I'd still go looking for alignment problems before yanking the tranny out.

I've only done it up-on-the-hard and not owning any scuba gear I'd be suspect of my own findings, but yeah, it can be done in the water. I would think it would be difficult to check the cutlass visually while under water though...
