I am looking at a local 1990 33' foot Wellcraft St. Tropez. However, unlike almost every other examples of this boat, this has twin 5.7L I/Os. Every other example I have seen on the market has twin 7.4L inboards.

Do you think that this boat would be underpowered with the 5.7s? It's has a displacement of 11,200. This is a little heavier than a Sea Ray 330 of that era.

Opinions?

My slip neighbor has a '89 Wellcraft St. Tropez, we actually went for a ride on it yesterday. It has 5.7 inboards. It gets on plane "O.K.", meaning it seemed like it took almost full throttles to get on plane, we had six people on it. IMO, I don't think it is underpowered. Once it was on plane it cruised rather well............. I had a '90 310/330 DA with 7.4 inboards and it could get on plane with zero effort.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I will go take a look at the boat this week sometime. I just didn't want to waste people's time if it was a pig in the water.

I almost bought a new Gran Sport around 1990. I think I remember that some Gran Sports and St Tropez model from the late 80s and early 90s have a problem with stringers breaking free from the hull. Glad I passed on that boat! You want to have these boats very, very carefully surveyed by someone who knows the problems.

Best regards,
Frank

That is a lot of boat for only 5.7s. Keep in mind that you will use more fuel getting that boat on plane and maintaining speed, than you would with 7.4s. The small motors are working harder and therefore using more fuel to sustain a speed of 22kts than 7.4s.

It's always better to have too much horsepower than not enough.
