I just bought a 2006 320. Today we were moving it from the broker to our marina. Right after we were underway, I lost water pressure in the port engine. I shut it down and we continued on the starboard. When we tied up, I opened the hatch and immediately saw the serpentine belt had broken. The belt looks to be in good condition. I inspected all idlers and found them in good condition. The alternator spins freely. The water pump had belt shavings in the pulley grooves.

My question is, should the water pump spin while still in place and hooked up? I was able to move the pulley a little, and rolled the pump a quarter turn but it felt like it had a lot of pressure. Trying to figure out if I had a bad belt ,or if the water pump caused this ,without pulling the pump.

I'm gonna say water pump... you should be able to spin it freely.

Get them both rebuilt while your doing it.

Which pump are you referring to?

The circling pump should spin freely. That is the one in the center of the motor like a conventional water pump in a truck.

The raw water pump will be difficult to turn. That is the pulley down very low on the on the starboard side of the motor (for a sterndrive application)

My sea water pump had bad bearings and broke the belt.

I am talking about the raw water pump.

I assumed circulating pump, it should spin easy... like Espos4 said the raw water pump will be hard to turn because of the impeller.
