I noticed that on the box too. Bad things happen at what, 210? 215 maybe?

I'm all about a full clean burn but that's scary close
I don’t know the official answer, but I’ve always had 210* in the back of my mind.

So the thermostats are 97*C and 210-215*F is roughly 100*C. That’s only a roughly 3*C buffer. Not much wiggle room.

I remember when they changed the thermostats in the 400DA to the higher temperature opening. My mechanic didn't think it was a big deal due to the robustness of the 3116's cooling capacity. What we did notice in the years following was the oil analysis showed less dilution and soot. Not markedly but still....
 
Are non CAT 185 thermostats available?
Good question, the problem being how to cross reference.

Since my temps are very consistent at 203*F on my digital gauges, I set an caution/warning alarm in my DSM 410s for 3* and 5* over, so 206 and 208.

I think this is one problem I'm not going to tackle and just keep an eye on how they run.
