Have you compared the torque curves for both engines?

You have to look around but they are out there.

Torque and longevity would be the two things I would compare. Pulling more power out of small blocks tends to shorten their lifespan.

The 350 has a reputation for being very long lived. I think the 305 does as well, but my impression is that 350 may be a stronger choice.

Why are you looking at 305 vs. 350?

That being said, with normal use and good care, the 305 should probably be just fine if you've already bought it.

the 305 was about $700 cheaper than the 350 from the same builder I am hoping to get better fuel consumption out of the 305 with the 300 hp he told me the 350's he builds put out 340hp I thought 300hp from the 305 would be enough power I've ran ob's for many years don't know to much about ib/ob's

Why do you think a 305 vs 350 is going to give you better fuel economy? ...Ron

The fuel economy difference will be about nill. The 305 will work harder for a given boat speed vs. a 350 that will work less for that same speed. If you're going through the effort to swap in a new engine, get the 350.

In fact, some vendors price the 350 block cheaper than the 305 because parts are so plentiful. Ask your builder and maybe he will negotiate with you.

Doug

thanks for your reply's I will talk to my builder today

To answer your question Ron. When I ran ob's I had a 140 and replaced it with a 175 the top speed was only 5mph faster but out of the hole it planed twice as fast but there was a big difference on fuel consumption on the 175 it was like I was over powered

I agree with Doug; and would go with the 350 if it were me.

Either will work but I think you'll be better off, on multiple fronts, with the 350.

Jeff
