300DB Restoration Continues-Bridge Station

Last night I finished it up. Found some pink wire and wired in the fuel gages and installed a new compass.

Note: When I installed the compass I noticed there were no mounting screws provided with the adapter. I then became worried about find non-magnetic screws. As any good DYIer I read the instructions. I found out good quality SS screw are non-magnetic! I guess an old dawg can be taught new tricks.

I did not like the wires for the light on the compass. Could they make them any smaller. I think they were 100GA, ok maybe not but they were so small and difficult to work with.

I added sealant to the ridge and installed the curtain that protects the area from moister. Then installed the trim tab switches and cover plates to hide holes the PO had cut out of the console.

She is ready to install on the tub! I hope they all work. As Mike has suggested, I have decided to use terminal blocks to connect everything up. The original plugs are either missing or corroded so badly that they are useless.

As always - you are doing a great job -:smt038
the terminal ends on your gauges look great.
Love the photos and narrative/description of work.

Thanks. I did find a terminal end last night that was not right, so I had to unwrap everything and make it right. I am really impressed with the terminals and wire I recieved.

Took the console to the boat and just placed it on the stands but did not secure it just in case I had to take it down. Good thing.

I found out quickly that I didn't order all the parts I needed. I need a couple more terminal ends and 2 bus bars (one for +12vdc and the other for ground. At this point I didn't want to cut corners.

So I placed a priority on the gages and start switches. Wired everything. Did a ground check and switch on tests. So far so good. Fired up the port engine and not all the gages worked. The tach, oil and temp gage didn't work. I jumped the gage signal wire over to the stbd tach and I got indication. Then I jumped the oil over to the stbd and nothing. then I turned the key, switches on the stbd side and I was getting oil indication on the stbd side. mmmm It would appear the wiring harness for the stbd side had the port oil gage. That was corrected.

Then I went to shut it down and it would shut down! All switches and key off and the engine kept running! I had to pull the ciol wire to shut it down. I found the wiring schematic was incorrect about a hot wire to the igition switch. I disconnected that wire and both engines shut down like they are suppose that.

I also fired up the stbd side. At this point I have 3 gages inop, port tech and both temp gages. Tomorrow I will remove the console and remove the gages. I will exercise the position switch on the back and take all 3 gages and take them to the cabin and hook them up and make sure it is the gages.

Thanks again Mike. Terminal blocks saved me a lot of time.

looking good. you are getting closer everyday.

glad the TB's worked out for you they look like they fit nicely. it should make trouble shooting pretty straight forward.

interesting about the ignition. What did you do to get it sorted out? Was it just the wrong wire on the wrong post on the ignition switch?

The gage schematic says connect the red wire to the ignition side of the switch. When it is, the engine will not shut down. You go to the switch schematic and it doesn't show it, so I disconnected it and it works great.

I also found 3 bad gages. A tach and both temp gages. While I had the console out, I removed the wire completly.

While I wait on my 3 gages I ordered I thought I would wire up the rest of the console. What a job! Took me over 4 hours and I still am not done. Still have bilge pumps, alarms and the steering pump to install.

I did find something interesting. I thought as I had a house battery (3 batteries in the compartment) that everything but the engines ran off this battery. Not true. Most everything runs off the engine batteries! I guess I better hook up the emergency start solenoid....

Show pictures later after I “clean up” the wire job.

How's it shaping up? Been checking my email looking for an update.

Bottom cleaned my boat today since we had to pull for the earl scare. Directed by the base Captain.

Parts waiting on sticking parts. I ordered 3 gages and one went backorder. I had to order another temp gage so I am hoping to have it this week.......

Still waiting on a gage.......I hate this waiting. Tested the rest of the panel and found I had an issue with the nav/anchor lights. Had two wires crossed in the wire bundle. The wiring schematic shows three wires coming off the nav/anchore switch. 1-grey/red and 2 greys. The grey red is the back light on the mast light (anchor) and the two greys are full nav lights and front mast light. I found the issue in the ground connection in the mast plug. Instead of a 3-pin plug, SR uses a 2-pin plug with the ground going through the case. Plug is junk! (3-pin plug would have been better). I had to disassemble the plug on both sides and clean the ground wire and put the mess back together. Wish I could have taken pictures, but mom and the admiral are on a trip and she has the camera.

Now I wait and wait and wait and wait for my temp gage. This is the only thing I need to install the whole mess back!!!!! Did I mention I am still waiting....:smt009

Update: Got the last gage on Friday and installed the console on the tub. Took me about 4 hours to connect all the wires to the terminal blocks. After some very aggravating hours, I found the temp gages signal wires crossed. Thank goodness for the terminal blocks. The temp signal wire for the stbd gage was on the port plug and visa versa.

All my gages on the bridge are Faria gages and are newer. The cabin has the original Teleflex gages. The bridge and cabin gages do not match for the most part. Tach=1500 on bridge, 1200 in cabin, Temp 165 bridge, 150 in cabin. I ran a wire bundle to the bridge and connected the Tach, temp and oil directly from the engine to the terminal block at the bridge console. About the same result. I am thinking it is the old Teleflex gages. I see a new cabin dash in the future.

Took the old controls apart and cleaned them. They are a lot smoother now. I flipped the gear box control over so that it is in the correct position. i.e. push forward and the boat goes forward instead of the half-ass backwards way the PO had it. Had to also change the cabin controls to match the bridge. Connected the controls. I installed the old controls and will replace them at a future date.

Everything seems to be coming together. I have the high water alarm to install, then start buttoning the project up. Will catch up on pictures, then off the engine compartment. I saved the best for last......

Looks nice!!

...but, isn't there a way to polish those levers' bases???
