300DB Restoration Continues-Bottom Paint

Tom, Why the difference in color between the bottom and sides - is that some sort of residue left over
I don't see what your are seeing, it looks the same to me. Are you perhaps seeing the blue painters tape? The time I used the Interprotect on my old 26'er, I noticed that you could see roller marks after it was done. Maybe thats what you're seeing?

I would have to agree. The bottom without paint was a little whiter because I sanded it gel-coat a little.

On the side this is a slight color difference between the bow and long the sides, I think this was due to the punishment it took in Florida from the sun and the lack of care.

Too cold this New Year's weekend to do anything. This sucks.......... I was hoping to have it back at the house and start working on the inside......

Oh well....

Tom,
I was looking at your last few pics - below the boot stripe looks darker in the above picture? You said it seems lighter colored. I was just curious what to expect when I started. Thanks Don

I may be a little lost here. Are you talking right above the keel blocks and down from the stand? The paint is still wet there. The next coat will be white, the grey, then white again.

Folks in Oriental are telling me this is the coldest they can remember............figures, I wanted to have it out of there by Jan 1st. Looks like another month's rent....

Oh well, just do it right and wait.:smt089

SUCCESS!!!!

NC coast was blessed with warm weather this weekend. Friday I rolled Interprotect 2000E, alternating white and grey. I put on 6 coats total with the last coat white. The last coat is the most important. Once applied, you have to keep testing it. When it gets tacky and you leave a thumb print on the paint and not on your thumb, it is time to apply the bottom paint. I used Interlux Micron Extra, black.

I found two pieces of necessary equipment, rubber gloves and a paper paint coveralls. You will get paint on you. The Admiral was laughing at me, because when we were done, she said I looked like I had applied war paint on my face.

One thing I was worried about was the tape I used. It was the 3m blue painter's tape. It had been on the boat for almost 3 months! Paul at Triton Yachats said it would be difficult to remove. Boy I was lucky! I started to pull it and it left a nice crisp line.

Next weekend, I will put it back on the trailer. While it is up in the sling, I will sand and paint the 2 small areas on the keel that were on wood blocks.

I have learned a lot in this process. I probably could have paid someone cheaper to re-paint my boat, but I would not have had the experience or actually get to know what condition my hull is in. Also the enjoyment of hard work coming to such a great end.

I want to say Thanks to Paul at Triton Yachats in Oriental NC for he free advice, patients with my endless questions and allowing me to camp in his boat yard on the weekends. He sells sail boats and also has a transportation service for boats. If you want to contact him, PM me and I will pass on his number to you. Thanks Paul. My wife and I have fallen in love with Oriental.......

I just read through this entire thread and what a great read. I learned a lot. I agree with you, Tom, I too would like to do my own work. There really is a great joy of the experience, finished product and the pains of doing it.
I had to laugh when you said that is a lot of boat to sand. I just moved up from a 270 Sundancer to a 400EC. Now that is a big difference and I want to do the bottom of both boats this coming summer.
Well, let me close, wish you a happy holiday and Merry Christmas - I need to go and start working out before I start this project. :smt043

Thanks Joe and Thank you for your service to our country!

Im new to the boating world and am wondering why you paint the bottom?? I see boats with paint and some without.
Why paint and not gelcoat??

Gelcoat is approved for marine applications because it is not porous, if your gel coat is blistering its paint your seeing, not gelcoat. Ive been shooting gelcoat for 10 years and paints from irmon to endura. Paint will always fail under water because it is porous.
Not get get on to that topic for argueing, but ive can go either way beacuse i have the equipment to shoot gelcoat. So what is the best???
How often do you have to paint your hull??
What do you use to stripp the old paint??

I just read the interlux website, looks like Gelcoat is porous.
Im going to check with our paint companies to get a better understanding about it. We recently painted a oil tanker, and used a rustolium bottom paint becuase that was the spec from the manufacturer and i was told that it will fail in 11800hrs aginst salt and corrosion. The maufacturer and paint company both stand behind Gelcoat for the reason that paint is to porous and breaks down way faster than gelcoat. This looks like 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

Thank you.

When people begin realize what all of us have done to have the freedoms that we have I believe they will then begin to understand why this is the best country on the planet. People serve not for themselves - but for the people we have pledged to protect. To defend the people and our constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. And I thank you as well!!
