Gary's thread about who wears a PFDs got me thinking a bit...

For you guys with a 280DA, where do you store your PFDs while out on the water but not wearing them? Currently mine stay in the cabin which doesn't seem like the best place for them in an emergency, but I cant seen to find a good place for them in the cockpit area without being in the way.

I keep 2 under the aft bench seat. I also keep two under the cockpit sink, and two in the dinghy on the swimplatform.

I have 2 in the starboard side locker (near the swim platform) because its generally the 2 of us. When we have guests, they are under the rear seat and the throwable is under the cockpit sink.

keep of all mine under the v-berth storage and the throwable behind the capt. chair. probably should have at least two handy in the cockpit area

We keep a throwable behind the captains chair, a ring is mounted on the radar arch, and 2 or 3 (depending on passengers) in the starboard locker.

Don't have a 280DA. . so my cockpit is different. However, I do keep a quantity of the orange things in the cockpit (about 10) I generally like to have decent PFD's (which are also our Jetski PFD's) for everyone (usually four people); and I put those in the cabin.

So in a MAJOR "act now" emergency, I can get at plenty of the orange PFD's. If I have time, then we can the "good ones" from the cabin.

Throw cushion behind the helm seat,
Two type two in the little starboard cubby by the transom door
Two type one in the cave on the mattress behind the steps
Four self-inflating vests on top of the V-Berth shelf thingies (these usually end up topside if we are using the dinghy)
Six type two in the starboard V-berth storage area.

I keep 2 throwables behind the helm seat, 6 beneath the cockpit sink where the cooler would go, 2 in the starboard locker, and a few spares under the v birth. I have never had more than 8 people on board and I always show guests where the pfd's are and ask if they would like to have one by their side while on the boat. I do go through a little safety orientation with guests and it seems to put inexperienced people at ease.

Sounds like everyone goes with the shotgun approach of a few scattered around the boat in various places. That makes good since think, better than my current method of having them all in the cabin stored a large vinyl bag (basically just several of the orange type). Ill pick up a few good vests and scatter them around as you guys have mentioned.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Keep at least 2 under the rear seat more if more peeps onboard. Throwable behind helm seat.

A throwable behind the helm seat, if I'm sitting for awhile while crusing I sit on the throwable so I can sit a little higher up. PFD's are under the sink were the cooler would normally go. I also have few more under the front bunk.

JYurgo, I have to say that you display one of the nicest action photos of a 280DA that I have seen. I guess there are many reasons why Sea Ray has produced the 280 for almost a decade and your photo highlights one of the main reasons. It is a very pretty boat.

I have mine behind the helm seat, and we find we can fit 3 stuffed into the space between the aft bench and the port freeboard. They wedge in there and stay put, but are within easy reach if needed. Throwables in the starboard aft locker and under the cockpit sink.

If you need them quick, they're useless in the cabin...

tippy - Thanks, it would be better if my flag on the transom wasn't all caught up on itself. There is a helicopter that flies around our area and takes action shots. They then post them on their website you to puchase. I sit here on a colda$$ night in Michigan staring at this picture, I think it truly makes me smile...

It looks like you are naked in that pic.

We have similar cockpits, I suppose. I keep my wife's and mine behind the helm seat at the ready. The kids always wear their's and I have a bag o' Le Orange ones up forward beneath the v-berth.
Jyurgo, that's a cool pic. Last summer we had the BOATPIX guys fly over. I just haven't gone to check it out yet
