So still searching for our next boat but started thinking maybe a single engine might be fine for us. How are the single engine 270 or 280'sDA? Probably around late 90's or early 2000's. I don't care about top speed but want to be able to plane with 5 or 6 people. Is a single engine 280 powerful enough?

I have a 280DA with twin 4.3 MPI engines. It will easily plane with 5-6 onboard (as long as the bottom is clean). For a boat that size you might be better off with a twin setup. It will be a lot easier to get in and out of dock. The bow sits fairly high and is a bit of a weathervane. I wouldn't want to run a single engine configuration on that boat and try to get it in a slip...

I had 10 people (about 7-8 adult weight total) a few weeks ago. It took a while, but I was able to get up on plane in smooth water. I have no problem with 5 adults. Weight dispersion makes a difference, and with the 10 people, they all wanted to sit in the stern. We weren't going far, so I didn't push them to move forward.

I've got a '95 270 with a 5.7 and with the right prop I'm doing good. I always wanted a 7.4 but the gas consumption vs performance convinced me otherwise.

I've got 2 friends w/ 280s. 1 is a 02' with the 320HP 6.2 bravo3 and its sort of a dog. Slow out of the hole and bit of a pain to keep on plane at slower speeds. He's picky about seating and gear arrangements. The other is a 04' w/ The the 496 mag bravo 3. No need to worry about tabs, planes easily and cruises nicely around 3400 rpms at +/- 28mph. Fuel consumption is not terrible either. I've been on both and it seems that thecops 02 is always working hard and is loud. The 04 cruises nice with power to spare.

Buddy has a 99 270 with the 7.4 and in my opinion this boat needs twins... it is slow to plane and very hard to plane with any gear or water aboard.

I have a 94 270 with a 7.4 Bravo III. With two adults and two more 100 lbs dogs it planes easily, 25 mph at 3200 RPM burns about 12 gal per hr at that rpm.

Were happy with it.

Just sold a 1995 270 that has a single 383. No problem getting on plane, cruises at 27 mph and burns 13.8gph.
