27 people on a 34' boat sinks

I feel so sad for the young ones and their families they didn't have a chance they trusted the adults when will people learn how dangerous the water can be.

Just saw this on the news. I don't do much boating on the north shore but when I do I notice a lot of inexperience up there. Very sad to see this happen.

Very sad and such a shame 3 children had to pay the price for the bad decision of their 'elders'. If you watch the news clip, what would have caused a boat that size to come completely out of the water with that many people on board?

That's is just plain awful, and so sad. Reckless child endangerment with that many folk aboard. How could the Captain possibly think that was a safe operating condition? I just can't imagine how they all squeezed aboard a 34 footer. He's got to live with this for the rest of his life and it was so unnecessary. It does not surprise me though, our son's a Coastie and he says the stupid things folk do are unbelievable. The other year in the face of a hurricane a couple set off from Key West back to Miami with children on board and their boat was smashed to pieces, luckily they were found alive.

I was headed back last night from fireworks also and heard the coast guard call on the radio, another boat said he pulled 7 people onboard his boat, i didnt know at the time of the deaths, very sad. Listening to it unfold.

My brother had a 34' Siverton convertible. It is a sturdy boat. We had about 15 people on board at one time and it seemed fine but 27 people on that boat would have been insane. Not sure if it was a convertible that sank, but if too may people were on the bridge it could get top heavy real quick.

The latest story has the captain blaming a "Road Wave" for the tragedy. I am sure that they meant Rogue Wave!

Man captaining yacht blames road wave for capsizing
OYSTER BAY - The man at the helm of the 34-foot yacht when it capsized in Cold Spring Harbor spoke to News 12 Long Island about the tragedy.

Very sad indeed. I saw the story that stated no on was wearing PFDs. I blame the parents for going out on an overcrowded vessel without PFDs and I think the captain should be charged with at least manslaughter and sent to prison. There is absolutely no excuse these children had to loose their lives because of idiot adults, but then again you can't fix stupid...Good grief.:smt013

I've had HUGE HUGE HUGE wakes toss us around from inconsiderate boaters in the last few weeks. I understand that "you are responsible for the damage your wake causes"...HOWEVER! I do not accept 27 people on a 34' boat! I do not accept "PFD's don't have to be worn if the child is in a cabin" The whole boat is practically a cabin!
It's a sad story that will be repeated until the end of time

The captain should be charged with manslaughter atleast.
he should be hung by his nuts first and then hung by his neck untill very dead, and then tossed in the ocean.
Oh wait, that would be cruel and unusual punishment to the marine life.Better to grind him up for a chum bucket.

Last report I read was that "the 1984 Silverton was a very recent purchase". I can imagine the captain telling everybody to come see the fireworks on his new boat. He has no idea how the boat reacts, or even that he is illegal. He goes blindly out to watch the fireworks with an overloaded boat with no clue. You see it every weekend and you wonder how this doesn't happen more often.

this is sad
but seriously on the PFD issue...
does anyone even think there were 27 PFDs on board ??
I would doubt it

FIRST thing I do before we even start the engine...designate PFD's for all aboard. If I don't have enough, I borrow one or two from my friends. I have 8 on board. 4 Mae West, 4 ski type vests.
Just this past weekend I watched a 20-22' cuddy type boat go past me with three young girls on the bow with their feet hanging over the sides, no pfd's (not to mention, not legal) drive right past the marine popo. Needless to say, they got "pulled over". There is a strong MP and CG presence where I am, and I appreciate it!

It's unfortunate, but when these kind of things happen, we all pay the price for it, especially in New York. They'll be stopping every boat all summer long now.
