260 Sundancer Thread.........Comments questions and answers

Great, thank you for the info guys. I'll have it matched to the water line then since I dont care what it looks like on the trailer. wow, 400 hours, that is awesome medic!

Justin

Thanks. Started with 30 min on her and 1 year and 7 months later at 438 as of this morning. Just came off the water this morning after an overnight on Cat island on the Wando. Brought my 50 foot extension cord and watched the Carolina / Clemson game on the beach on my little 15 in. LCD. Brought it up on the island and ran it off my inverter. It was SO cool!!! Brought a (I cheated) fire log, lawn chair and a 6 pack of old school PBR. Thought I was in dam paradise. Then again, I guess I was. Only on a boat my friend!! No roads to where I was.

Medic's paint line looks better than the way it comes from the factory in the bow area. Right now the bow portion on mine is lower than what shows on Medic's boat. When mine sits in the water a whole lot more of the bottom paint shows on the sides than shows on the bow and that has always bugged me.

BTW........mine is just shy of 400 hours too. In another month or so it should go over that.

I'm already at 440.

Quick question - what is the normal operating temp for the 7.4 liter Merc? I did a search here and looked through the manuals (and may have missed it) but could not find it.

I am running 170 degrees F when warm at idle but she will creep up to 190 or so when running hard. I have only had her a little over a month so I have no frame of reference.

Thanks all.

Weaver Snap Davits for a 260DA?

Hi all. This is my second season with my 2005 260 Sundancer, and I have picked up loads of useful info from this forum, so thanks for all the great input!

I know there are plenty of threads about dinghys and davits elsewhere, but do any of you use snap davits to store your dinghy on the swim platform of a 260? If so, does it affect the handling/performance and did you mount the davits on the platform or use the 'transom' vertically mounted type.

I have contacted Sea Ray, but they cannot provide any info as they have not tested this.

Quick question...that water hose spigot in the transom locker, does that use water from your fresh water tank or does that take lake/river water? We are making a big slip and slide and i'm trying to figure out how to do it the most efficient way.

Hi, we have the same setup and this is exactly where ours runs all the time, right on the 170 mark. It always bothered me until I did searches on line and found that this is where its supposed to run (at least all the posts I've seen). It would be nice if 170 is in the middle of the gauge instead of 3/4 of the way up...

It will use water from your freshwater tank unless you have city water connected to the boat. At least this is how ours works.

Yes, it does pull from the water tank, however I have found that if you have dockside water hooked up you still need to turn off your fresh water pump or you will continue to draw from the tank and not the dockside hookup.

Chuck thanks for that. You know recently I was doing a washdown and had the slip water plugged in and assumed it would over ride the tank water. And come to think of it, my tank water next time I checked it was much lower than I expected... must be because of what you said. Given the piping schematic, I wonder what causes water to be pulled from the tank than the dock line??

Guys, this 260 in CT is still available..111 hours was the newest update..left him an email if it has a trailer, and what maintenance history it has..

http://www.boattrader.com/listing/2005-Sea-Ray-260-Sundancer-96969908

No 280 but itsIts purrty..and I can haul it around.. Thinking of gong for $45K?

Well..I'm biased but I bought a 2000 fresh water 260 without the cherry cabinetry and 420 hours for about half that price in October. It is a very nice looking boat though. I'd do some thorough price comparison research before moving on it (though perhaps you have already done that).

One of the pictures on the listing is of the electrical panel. No ac or gen or- but if you do not need them, it is a nice boat. Does not seem to have a windlass or searchlight or TV.

Good negotiation points...think $40K will be to lowball? I still would need a damn trailer and they look about $6K new unless I get a used one..

No AC might suck bad if we ever want to spend the night on the boat docked..

CKL your boat looks awesome in that pic..so sporty...how much faster is it with the 496 (is that the 6.2 merc?) over the 5.7? Just on the looks of the 260 its a travesty that she doesnt pull at least ~45-50mph..

You may want to put this post in the trailering section. The dry weight is 7500 +/- on the 260. If it is full of gas, that is about another 500 lbs. That tri-axle trailer is probably 2500-3000lbs. You can get the model and check with the manufacturer. I would think a dual axle trailer would be more appropriate for a 260 and weigh a good bit less but you would need to check capacities to be sure.

With that said, you may be able to tow it with a newer F150/Silverado 1500/etc if you can get the trailer weight down close to 2K lbs. Most of those advertise a towing capacity of around 10K pounds. Any more than that and a F250/2500 will be required. You may be able to pull it physically with less but your drivetrain and suspension will suffer along with obvious safety concerns of overloading.

However you end up you just need to reference towing specs by year/model tow vehicle you are looking at. Each manufacturer seems to nudge up their towing capacity each year by 200lbs or so they can say they have the highest towing capacity for that model year.
i borrowed a f250 to tow my 06 260DA 1000 miloes to its new home.
3/4 ton truck is the minimum in my opinion.
it struggled to keep at highway speeds.
1/2 ton truck is doable but real dicey

Thanks, I am very happy with it. The 496 is an 8.1 (375 hp). The 6.2 is 320 hp and the 350 MAG (5.7) is 300 hp.

This is the Boattest.com test results of the 2005 model with the 496. It says a top end of 43.8 but I have seen 45 on portable GPS.

This is the test results of a 2001-2004 260 (much lighter boat than 2005 and newer) with a 5.7. It says top speed of 38.

This boat really shines at higher speeds (30 mph plus) - very stable, precise and slices the chop.

I would not be ashamed to start at $40,000 ( heck, I just lowballed an offer on a 53' Hatteras). Just do not expect them to accept it, but it will get the conversation started.

July 4th has passed and boat dealers want to sell as the new models are on the way and this boat is going to be another year older. Time is on your side.

I paid about $5,000 for my trailer new.

Happy Hunting!
