CONGRATULATIONS !!!!

And I do agree with you that the new 270DA is a nicer boat than the 260DA. I hope you really enjoy it.

Yeah, me too but I could have saved you lots of money...........

Seriously, it looks to be a very nice boat. Congrats

Thanks Dave!

Did you by any chance have the opportunity to take the 270 out on a test drive? I dont think mine will be in the water until spring (short boating season up here) and I am curious to see if anyone has been out in this boat? dj

Not yet but my dealer did and I trust his opinions. According to him the boat jumps on plane quickly and has a top speed of 42 mph with the 350 MAG. It does not exhibit the quirky traits of the current 260DA either. It sounds like they got this one right.

Congratulations on the new boat! The layout looks nice.

I'm surprised that it would get to 42 MPH with the 350 MAG. I have the same engine in my 270 AJ and it tops out at 35 MPH with a minimal load. The 270 AJ and the 260 DA are built on the same hull, but the 260 DA is 600 pounds heavier. Could a different hull design make a larger boat faster even if it's heavier?

Yes, definitely. A boat like the Larson 270 with a 350 Mag will do 45+, mainly due to the (Duo -Delta Conic)stepped hull.

Good point about the stepped hull. Hadn't considered that, as Sea Ray doesn't make a stepped hull.

I don't think it's quite a valid comparison though. The Larson 274 weights in at 6,000 lbs so it benefits from both a stepped hull and almost 2,000 lbs less weight (vs. 260 DA - 1,300 lbs less vs. 270 AJ). Makes sense that an equivalent power package will push it faster.

Keeping it in the Sea Ray design family, it is possible that a different (non-stepped) design will yield a faster top end with a heavier total weight? I assume the new 270 DA has a longer LWL than either a 260 DA or 270 AJ.

A longer waterline will allow a higher speed before the boat tries to get up on plane. However, hull design for increased speed on plane is not a factor of waterline length, but more one of surface area of the hull in contact with the water at a given speed, as well as angle of attack.

Thanks, my dealer is saying the same. Will see in the spring. Another question...do you have a genny in your 260? I am thinking of adding one to the 270 but some are saying it is overkill? dj

I don't have one but wish I did. It all depends on how you use your boat and your location. Down south a genny gets a lot more use for running the A/C when on the hook in the summertime. Up north where you are it may be overkill.

If I were you I would base my decison on how often you intend to be away from the dock and want Heat or A/C or the ability to run your Microwave. If you do a lot of overnighting on the hook, then I would get it. Otherwise it's not necessary. The rest of the boat will run OK off batteries and you can still have hot water too since the hot water tanlk is heated by the engine coolant while underway.

I cleaned my engine water sea strainer yesterday. All went well, buthad a question. I closed the appropriate seacock per the owners manual instructions, but as I opened the coontainer it is in, it still dumped about three quarters of a gallong of water into the bilge. I hate when that happens as I enjoy a bone dry bilge.

Any tips on how to do this in the future, without water overflowing from the strainer? I had to hurry and close the thing, as if I hadn't, it seemed like the whole ocean was going to come in! :smt009

I picked up the 2009 brochure yesterday at our local boat show and no 260 or 290DA. The 270DA is in as well as the 280DA. They have added yellow to the gel coat options for express cruisers.

On my strainer you remove the top of the strainer (no water spills out) and then just pull it out and clean it and replace it. If you removed the bowl itself (this is not necessary on our boats) maybe that's why the water spilled out.

I'm thinking or changing my 220 Sun Sport for a 260DA ( called 275DA in the UK for some reason ). I see this boat is being replaced with the new 270 which looks very, very nice.

Dave S, earlier in this thread said 'It does not exhibit the quirky traits of the current 260DA either. It sounds like they got this one right.' Could someone explain what these 'quirky traits' are? As Sea Ray have only been making the 260DA for a few years, is there something wrong with it I should be aware of?

Any comments are much appreciated.

Hi!

I can not really comment on the quirky traits of the 260 as I have not owned one and my new 270 will not be launched until spring, but in the process of choosing the boat, i was looking at at 240 then the 260, I must say that the fit, finish, spacious feeling of the cabin, larger head, great cockpit layout etc., really sold me on the 270. I would definately have a look at one before buying a 260. Funny enough, I was at a dealer having a first look at the 240 vs the 260, and a couple rushed in and purchased the 260 before I could even board the boat and have a look.......a sign???.....I dont know but am thrilled with the 270 and looking forward to the spring. fj

Did you find 250DA in the 2009 brochure?
